Misconceptions, forgotten New York remnants, durability.

I love this link about the misconceptions of Mexico – and right now love the amazing weather Mexico has right now – 16 Celcius, 60 Fahrenheit – amazing weather and just good to be outside.

I forgot to mention, when people asked, “Did you get the _MG_6863 _MG_6864Shamrock Shake this year in New York?”  Why, thank you for asking.  I was manic about this.  MANIC.  Overall, I actually missed out on hitting a McDonald’s in New York on Match 17th, I tried in Times Square and the crowd was so large following the parade, only so many people were allowed in at a time, it was THAT packed, lol.  However, my Repentino. staff was so amazing in keeping track of if I did, where I could, and leading me to get one, and believe it or not, YES!  The day after this year, they had them.  Not last year, but they did this year.  First time I ordered _MG_68573 for the staff that were with me at the time, and they could not finish it, so I of course, offered my services.

When I look back at the individuals we interviewed, the amazing aspects of all the workshops we took in and recycled to use back towards the Repentino. magazine, I also see how durable our staff is.  The qualities that they acquire along the way, and continue to develop, help make them more successful and able to relate to the world outside of school, that seems to be so amazingly satisfying.  Today, Daniela, one of our staff, brought in the in the certificate daniela certificateshe achieved throughout the Scholastic Writing and Art Awards, and it just showed me how much potential the students have when brought to their doorstep, truly, the sky is the limit.  Screen Shot 2014-03-28 at 8.14.43 AM

Dreams and success….

Looking back on New York, the collection of accomplishments makes you proud to know students from ASF cope so well and succeed on their own, once given the tools.  Here is my list that grows the more I think about it:

2014 Convention Schedule-2 – Tiana creating a planner (at the left as that link) for staff to use for the conference to help organize sessions.

Daniela/Karin, Monica, and Sonia/Erika mock presenting in front of staff 2 weeks before liftoff at Columbia.

The above staff presenting to packed conference rooms, fielding questions, and making connections with other schools as a result.

Staff fielding questions generated on their own to individuals in the careers of editing, publishing, drama, stage production, and not simply yes/no answers but what I call “fat” answers that led them to other topics.

Networking and swapping out versions of our magazine with other schools constantly.

Taking in the artistic expressions through the Metropolitan Museum and the MOMA and preferring to do so over the ST. Patrick’s Parade and other choices.

Tracking the information from workshops so staff can see and use this and apply to the future of Repentino.

Staff using social media such as Twitter, Facebook, and Tumblr, to broadcast what they have to share with other publications.

The whole staff sitting down with the chief judge of CSPA and learning what their mistakes have been in the past, and becoming wiser and more in tune with journalism and publishing for the 2013-2013 editions the are preparing for.

…and this is just from a 5 minute reflection…as I think on this past week I look back and see that the opportunity to apply the skills we have created, built upon, and developed in three years are finally coming to fruition and the staff is running with talent unseen before, what more could you ask for ?

The dreams part of this post is well, unusual, I have been dreaming, whichI do little, ALOT over the past three days, and maybe I can attribute that to exhaustion?  However from the dream I do recall of getting to one destination, then to another, and finally trying to figure out how to get to a final spot that involved crossing  large body of water, to the dream where I need to find and pick up school age friend Sam Michaels, from Butler, and I go to what I think is his place on top of American Avenue, roaming the side streets and not seeing familiar places, until I come across friends that remind me he doesn’t live here! – he lives near Oneida Valley Dam area! and I head to that area and realize this is where I should have been to pick him up hours ago (and in reality – he lived JUST off American Avenue) – what does it all mean?

I wish I knew thoughI have a suspicion that part of it is the many places we went and walked and headed to in New York somehow combined with my past – dreams – entertaining but a phenomenon.  Kind of like the talent exhibited daily from a dedicated Repentino. staff!

Saturday Sun…

Waking up later was heaven – the progressing feeling of concluding events in New York always causes mixed feelings, but sleeping in is amazing, and seeing the sunny warm weather  in New York on our last day was heavenly.

Packing early, I placed notes on my door of how we’d store luggage in one room, check out by 11:00 in all other rooms, meet back at the hostel at 1:00 – pick up at 1:45 – time to explore the area around the hostel including Broadway, a slower paced day to allow some to catch up on work needed, turn in notes, check Moodle, check any work from the assignment sheets pass back again (originals and copies), and just a slow backing out of New York heading back to Mexico.

A small group of us headed south on Broadway to see the large Barnes & Noble, the Staples, the awesome Canine Styles on Broadway, as well as catching a last minute Shamrock Shake and mailing off several magazine to artists that had submitted in the 2012-2013 magazine (I was able to mail 7 magazines for the price of 1 here in Mexico, and these were going to France, Netherlands, and Puerto Rico as well as stateside!).

I was asked often by students, on getting onto the plane if I had a good time, they had seen me stress over several things back and forth yet, I replied and do mean, that this was the most memorable trip yet, and yes, bittersweet as I was returning.  Things happened so fast and now it was sonly becoming a blur. Some of us would never be in this situation again as we had seniors that would be moving on to start their own new adventures.  For one week, I was able to spend time with some amazing students and laugh at their antics, enjoy their successes, and encourage them to dig deeper in themselves and pull out what they are capable of.  That in itself is priceless.

On the plane ride back, as I was watching Rush and A Good Year, I recalled the aspects of my father I missed, wondering sometimes if I had escaped to Mexico to escape facing the fears I had of a life in the states for the first time without my father. Yet I realized there was something deeper.  A portion of my father was the most knowledgeable person around when it came to mechanics, how anything mechanical ran, and how it could be fixed.  Yet, the other side of my father comes out n pieces through each of our family and is the most priceless gift he could have ever given any of us.  Finding a way to push others to do their best, motivate, ingratiate, and let others know they are more powerful than they realize, there is something that he left that allows each one of us in our family to seek these qualities out in others and want others around us to do amazing things.

Before this particular New York trip, I of course knew the staff members that agreed to come to New York – yet when I was leaving New York, I realized I found it hard to let New York go, but I realized New York would not be New York without the very students that had companied me.

These are aspects I learned –

Sonia – A smile and optimistic attitude with all can be found with Sonia.  Even when things go awry or not the way we planned,  Sonia was gracious and brings a calmness to all that she is interested in, for example when it came to questioning individuals about their career or something that interests her, even when it was not her area of interest, she still brought intelligence and interest to the topic.  I see her being powerful and quite capable of many good things in the future, her eye for art is a GREAT strength and the accent to the staff.

Payton – Payton has always said she is not good in art/literature etc, yet I am not sure she is aware of the power she has as a confident leader.  She when sure of herself and a decision she settles on is able to focus on that and go for it with all her might and talent.  Payton is confident and talented when it comes to reaching out to people, and a great staff member to have to push ideas and steps to work on surrounding the Repentino. staff.  I also think she is one of the tallest staff members when standing by Sonia  🙂

Monica – I have to say the one thing I always can identify and create a smile from is her laugh – Monica has this deeply found, solid laugh that can’t help but make you smile and join in laughing too.  On top of this, her optimistic approach to all, and a confidence that shows in the success of her workshop on creative writing? – she is unforgettable when you have challenges to overcome, you can count on Monica to make the day itself much better.

Erika -Erika is quiet and usually pretty laid back, but the main thing you notice is her willingness to push on and get through what needs to be done.  Erika never causes a commotion and even though elements might not go her way, Erika is a true team player and supporter and is there when you need her for advice and to pull together with the staff.  She brings a sense of calmness and a calm sensibility to the staff and what needs to be accomplished.

Cassandra – Cassandra is quiet yet she brings this gentle confidence to all she does. She isn’t the first individual to voice an opinion, nor is she the last, but without having to push a voice insistently, her gentle yet strong confidence in all she does is felt and she helps others around her feel the same.  She is all around kind, selfless, and supporting as a staff member.

Alejandro – Often mistaken for Monica’s name (maybe due to that they are two peas in a pod) – is seemingly quiet yet often adds a comment or two that can’t help but make you smile.  She is talented when she is asked to help achieve something, and combined with others, she is one of many reasons that things are done well.  Also having a personality that is easy going, she is a pleasure to have with the staff and helps all operate smoothly.

Fiona – I see in Fiona an ability to achieve that she does not fully see in herself.  Avidly interested in reading, authors, and new literature, her ability to accomplish a wide range of tasks (from amazing hot chocolate, to emails to customers, to helping organize Repentino. tasks and more), she is a REAL person enjoying real things, little artificial about Fiona.  She is talented and strong-willed and able to accomplish anything she sets her mind out to do.  The aspect of considering every page a treasure is rewiring to see and keep her rooted in the area of how much reading means to her.

Mariana I.- Mariana also has a smile that could easily accomplish anything.  She steps up to the plate when a task in needed, and the does it well.  Her optimistic approach to everything is contagious, and powerful among our staff.  Seeing her laugh and smile let s you push on and realize as a staff anything is possible.

Daniela – Always shedding a smile that affects everyone around her, her common sense and confidence can be sensed across the room.  Her ability to present, create, and tie together aspects of her interests (video, publicity, literature in general) is powerful and it is not impossible picture her as a visionary in design. Her good nature personality makes you feel good when she is just part of the staff.

Kim (Sam) – Also heavily knowledgable in all things literary, her talents with drums and music is not recognized enough by herself, though she has both.  She is talented in all these areas, and just needs to be willing to share them more to let others know what she is capable of.  Capable of so much, and is an asset and one of the best freshmen students we have ever had on staff, and with other staff members is always agile and willing to be on hand to help get tasks done to their end.

Karin – Brings a sense of responsibility to all she delves into, and with the involvement of social Media that involved Twitter, UTube, and more, Karin always shows a confidence and willingness to see things through.  Her ability to be excited over her accomplishments as well as the wonders of the world let others realize they too should be excited on how we support each other through our successes.  She always finds connections and solutions to share as was evident in her presentation.

Izabel – Very level-headed and a smile that also can’t help but get others smiling.  Her responsible and dependable nature tells everyone she is a staff member that can be depended on and see a ask through to its end.  Her genuine opinions and approach to all things Repentino. do make her one of the best staff additions to a staff she was unsure whether she could contribute to this year.

Luis – A very thorough and analytical staff member, Luis gets to the heart of the matter and makes very targeted and pointed observations that help the staff make decisions. His ability to improve staff morale based on supporting others is evident in diverse circles among staff.  He has a share sense of humor and is able to lighten the load for those around him in an instant.

Ernesto M – Lover pf pugs and cats, Ernesto is highly talented, vocal and represents one of many heartbeats of staff.  His vision for seeing a successful magazine shows through his support of others around him and letting his energetic personality spread among others.  Priceless to have him as a part of the Repentino. staff.  His expression that comes out in Open is always a source of warmness and celebration.

Victoria – While a late addition to the staff, her energy and enthusiasm spreads among others quickly, and perks others up when bad things need overcome.  Attentive to others, she supports those around her, always is good for a grand smile, that gets others doing the same, and we are thankful for her coming on board.  She is always good for a checking up on and lookout for others, and boldly goes forward with everything that needs attempted.

Miranda – So quiet at times that you might not see her around your shoulder (it has happened) Miranda is very present when it comes to getting anything done.  An avid reader and cherisher of all things literary, her ability to reach out to people, and really to get any task accomplished is solid.  It is excellent to see her excited about those things she likes, as she smiles and we hear her talk about what it is that appeals to her, and you realize there is much more to her than the quiet demeanor you see.

Nina – Okay, lets talk quiet – Nina can be the epitome of quiet, yet her keen observation when it comes to anything literary is indisputable.  Dependable, talented, and a sweet disposition, Nina is one of the most dependable individuals we have on staff and one of the luckiest additions to the staff as well.

Alice – Coming down from the quiet platform, Alice can be opposite of this quality and a part of this quality when she chooses.  Opinionated, a mover of things needing done, Alice  is able to record the most important details for use later, and has been a HUGE asset to the Repentino. staff.  Sometimes her voiced opinions cause a stir up, but always in the way that gets staff moving, and this is exactly what Repentino. needs at times.  I can’t help but think of the show Glee when I think of Alice, and I appreciate her boldness when it has come to Open Mic Night, her passion for the group carries through everyone on staff.

Alia – Beng a huge part of art and layout with the history of Repentino., it ties someone willing to take the good with the bad as a leader with any group.  Alia shows she is willing to take both, and roll with all things to show Repentino. has been and is a powerful personal and academic learning experience.  Having put in so much extra time in the past for the good of everyone pretty much sums up Alia’s commitment to something she believes in – and this spreads to everyone around her.

Tiana – A pretty laid back and relaxed back individual, even when stressed, Tiana is a very valuable part of the staff due to her commitment to helping the staff out overall. She is willing, committed, and patient, things I need to soak in and it is possible with her on staff.  We certainly did hit the jackpot but acquiring her as a staff member and know that her contributions impact us frequently.

Stephanie – Being the Mom of any group is not quite fun, and carefree, yet Stephanie has taken care of others in the staff over and over.  Willing to learn new things and outspoken, Stephanie is willing to speak her mind and also turn around and listen.  Her ability to do both and move the staff forward together is evident, and her participation is contributing to something that will show how we have all grown together is very visible.

Ms Dixie – A HUGE thank you to a chaperone that took on the risks of a large group with aloof activity and much time to be spent to have run smoothly. Willing to work alongside the students, willing to take in any and all the things that go with a trip, both good and bad, Ms Dixie made harmony out of all the above personalities and let the students know she was willing to sacrifice her time for them day after day.  She often sacrificed her own time for the sake of the other students and never failed to let them know this.  She was a major part of why this trip was as memorable as it was.

Take the above feelings, and then realize that there is still another half of staff that contain these and other amazing qualities, and what do you have?  A staff that defies the normal description of any group, and you see no matter where we go, be it in Mexico, be in the Pulizter Award Winning giver of journalism in Columbia University, with the right encouragement and motivation, the sky is the limit and even that cannot hold the Repentino. staff grounded for long.

Even with the above descriptions that ran through my head as the plane touched down in Mexico, I realized, as with Billy Joel’s song These are the Times to Remember, the time and place would never be able to reproduced, as well as the other times with previous staff, and New York just wasn’t New York without the accomplishments of each of these young staff members, they are simply amazing, treasures, and made the overall experience rewarding.  Descriptions above do not do them justice, yet, they grow with the experiences such as these and that makes huge difference.  Occasional stressors and complications exist with any large or small group, yet with the right group, away or here in Mexico, it is worth it.  Such it is with Repentino. 🙂

Fridays as a Conclusion, but also a starting point.

As we woke up – we knew we had an appointment with Ms. Zweibel, who would give us a critique on the magazine we did in 2012-2013, not judged because the category for print was not met due to problems with matching the design of layout between two different staffs, and meeting the hybrid deadline but not meeting the criteria exactly.  This allowed us to regroup with her and line all the statistics in a row – with her giving us a detailed look on the goods, the bars, and the uglies of what we do in production, as well as a look at the pages we have created for the 2013-2014 magazine.

We received tons and tons of tips that helped us understand the production side of what we were planning, designing, and developing as far as a theme and a organization of the Repentino..  Seeing our plans for 2013-2014 and hearing her say we had a Gold winner in our hands was refreshing, and we knew right there and then the growth of a staff that focused on weak points in the past has only become better.  We were excited and the staff should be proud of the strides they have made so far. We were able to discuss these elements until 10:00 and were able to move onto our last workshop – then meeting in the lobby of Columbia for our afternoon direction concluding an amazing conference.

A few of us would return to the WoolWorth’s building to meet Harlequin to pick up texts that would be given to us to review, then we would move onto Times Square for the afternoon.  We ran into the intriguing Toys R Us in Times Square, IMG_2333then more Shamrock Shakes at McDonald’s, finding the intriguing paint can artist IMG_2343on Times Square, checking the Hershey store, and moving to Applebee’s to eat.

We then found ourselves meeting at the MOMA at 5:00 – it was free on Friday’s!  Our small group found ourselves in Applebee’s on Times Square, then onto the  IMG_2352MOMA where we all checked in and began an adventure of amazingness.  I had never, ever been in the MOMA, and was excited, it was one surprise after another, level after level.  I grabbed the audio tour device and made it up to 40+ descriptions of art that simply blew my mind.

I think funny, the most excited I was was seeing level 5, the Mexican Art of Frido and Diego Rivera, and hearing those around me exclaim “Diego Rivera!” and “Frida!” and knowing we had such a treasure of access here in Mexico.  Seeing the classic Monet’s Picasso and EVERYONE just was an amazing way to end the tour, and even seeing the 6th level of special exhibits was great, but so much as seeing that 5th floor.  WOW.  New York at night, and in the MOMA, and just a great way to end the last full day in New York.  As we all met in the lobby, we all knew we were exhausted, but made it to 116th Street, separated to eat and made it back at 10:30 PM to just get off our feet, get caught up with any check-ins with assignments, and look forward to a non rushing morning on Saturday the day our our return!

Thursdays are better – but There is SO MUCH TO ACCOMPLISH!

I think the title seems to cover it,  but even with more sleep, we all felt the impact of a city as large as New York City – and realized how much it can wear you down mentally trying to cover every inch of area and also come out a major leader in a all tasks. We stopped at Oren’s on the way to Columbia, and then prepared for a new day of workshops.

We were off to Columbia at 8:00 as this started at 9:00 AM on Thursday, since we all were not quite in the lobby we decided to wait until Lunch to do our group photos.  We began the morning sessions, with Daniela/Karin and Monica on deck for presenting today – exciting!  I HATED the fact I had to choose between Daniela/Karin and Monica’s sessions, as I wanted to see them BOTH. I hoped to get to Monica’s and started in Daniela/Karin’s session.  Previous to their session, I have to say again, all the workshops were solid, worthwhile, and offered alot to add to our magazine, this one specifically on the criteria we needed to rank higher as a hybrid magazine (electronic and print with using the Tumblr site).  We talked alot about Common Core again, and were excited to see not 30, but actually about 8 standards covered in the tasks we did as a staff.

Daniela/Karin were great.  We had some technical difficulties, switched to Alia’s laptop, (barring the cute picture of Eric/Alia on the screen) – and began to get into why we used video, and HOW we used video

to promote Repentino.  In doing so, we aroused questions and links to other possibilities, such as using Utube Channels, possible Podcasts, and more to offer  teasers to the magazine all along the way.  The connections we made with the audience, were almost as valuable as the information that Karin/Daniela offered.  Speaking to some of the audience members, I never exited the session to see Monica (on nonfiction writing), and I HATED that.  I did rush after this to the meeting point at Lerner, and found out Monica’s session was PACKED, lots of people were inquiring, and Luis had helped with the prompts and getting individuals to respond to Monica’s presentation, she had done GREAT as well, which deep down, I knew all the individuals presenting this year were amazing.

We met and decided on a group picture, Screen Shot 2014-03-21 at 7.09.15 AM Screen Shot 2014-03-21 at 7.09.23 AMfront and back – which was hysterical and fun at the same time.  Balfour Yearbooks helped us with this, and we made this tradition solid again.  We grabbed lunch, went back to the afternoon sessions, and then hit the pavement.  Destination unknown to the staff, we headed to 42nd Street – walked to Vanderbilt and Ta da!  GRAND CENTRAL STATION.

Grand it was, seeing the vaulted ceilings, and taking in the rush that often caused this statement, “This is like Grand Central Station!”  We broke to explore the immediate blocks of Times Square, (finding out Ms. Dixie had strained her back helped decide to stay at the Barnes’ and Noble between 45th and 46th as a central meeting point if needed.  This helped to encourage a healthy dose of book and music browsing).  During this time, I travelled also back to the Imperial Theatre to drop gifts off to the stage managers, Mary Kathryn Fuynt and IMG_2228Davin DeSantis, who had led us through the back ways of the Les Miserables stage.  Funny, I was at the window and told I had to go to the stage door, and when I turned around, there was Davin!  (Ironic, no?!) I gave him a collection of items our student a had brought from Mexico, which he LOVED, and moved on to getting items from Pie Face and the take pictures of the pizza place we had frequented the night of the musical. We met back at that meeting point (appropriately) and made plans to drop off at the hostel and celebrate Stephanie’s birthday.  Where?

Well, we had to get rid of these bags for sure, and we did back at the hostel, where we found there was a comedy night.  However, I remembered the previous comedy nights the hostel had, and had not been impressed with the content or the material, and felt inside, we had better company with our own staff, so we headed out to…

…that’s right – Mel’s Burger!  We initially wanted Chipotle, and that was Stephanie’s pick, but Mel’s it was, with the same manager making all smooth and clear for a great celebration, complete with three deep fried Oreo cakes, wishing Stephanie a happy birthday in English and Spanish!  🙂  We convened, made it back to the hostel in a state of tiredness but a full day, and readied for a Final day at CSPA for meet with Ms Kathleen Zweibel, one on one, to discuss the criteria we needed to get our magazine within regulations of a competing magazine, that includes the electronic component.

The walk away from this day was realizing how involved the students were with networking, connecting with valuable skills they did each day with the magazine, and tying together the connections made with people that would further the reach of Repentino..  The teachers, administrators, and staff they met laid the foundation for a deeper level of publishing, writing gathering art, literature, and graphic expression, and in the process, they grew as well.  Exciting to see and I have to say, very proud of this young group of go-getters.

Working through WEDNESDAY! :)

Up at 6:00 AM, the staff was ready to roll out before 9:00, I raced to the CSPA conference early to get badges, lanyards, all their registration materials, and boom, we walked to Columbia – and we were in the thick of things!

As we walked to Oren’s – a HUGE shout out to Oren’s – THE best coffee, tea, pastries, everything, every year this has NEVER failed to impress, and Randy, Jason and Mike –  IMG_0260 IMG_0261 They rocked the coffee house and were amazing – as is Oren’s Every single time we go – Thank you guys!

Our First workshop on Trello was AMAZING – Alia was GREAT –

Screen Shot 2014-03-20 at 6.12.17 AMshe presented a ton  of information, and the audience was interested and asking, we involved them as members of  the Trello board, and they kept interacting over and over – A great start to a rushed morning.

Also – the students all went out and retrieved amazing information – and are continuing to network like crazy.  We are at lunch now, preparing our 3:30 presentation, and the first day, everyone at Columbia knows we are here in full force.  You should be proud of your sons and daughters, they are confident, professional, and confident.  Everyone here knows this.

We are finding out the Literary magazine Repentino., and after working on it today, has over 30 Standards and Justifications and we are aligned with Common Core right NOW thanks to our mission statement, editorial policy, and a clear focus and research based on our publications! YEAH Repentino.! We are having a panel of Common Core admin helping us work through this now.
Important applications to Repentino:
Applying knowledge of layout into the magazine/ Aligning Common Core with what we do already and what we can continue to do to meet standards of Common Core as it spills into other academic areas /curriculum.

Evaluation/Analysis/Compare and Contrast skills used constantly. Secondary and Primary sources evaluated and discussed.

IMG_0284IMG_0379Doing our second presentation, Ms. Dixie and I presented to STUDENTS in majority (one teacher present, and maybe 20+ students) the Common Core and teacher’s aspect of involving “teacher talk” and expanding your views to an omniscient point of viewing extracurricular and academic planning.  This ROCKED!  Ms. Dixie was AMAZING and provided an educational base that connected with Common Core, how we get students involved, and making student activities a learning experience using Repentino. as an example – this was a great second success in presentation format.

We enjoyed two Funny stories –

1)  Daniela, Ernesto and a few others went into s closely Chinese restaurant, to meet a lady that was well, not all there.  One of the girls was refused to change her order, another seemed to not have paid enough for their tip (due to some mediocre service) and they were kind of stopped until they added more tip  – all this during a brief hour lunch – I was amazed and yet laughing with them at their story and realized, it seems this could really only happen in New York, right?  Well then there was the bathroom story which Alia and Stephanie had, so I think that is best left to you asking them – and these two MIGHT take the cake of unusual events….:)

After working through an amazing day (and we all agreed the day was better in quality of the workshops) – we moved to a surprise destination – Dum sum…..DUMMMMM – Chelsea Piers! We had an hour to kill before boarding, so what did we do?  – BOWLING!

We decided to go bowling and ohmygosh – BEST choice!  Around 8 of us, went and I found I STINK after three years of not bowling , but I love the shoes, and love the experience of bowling!

IMG_0411 IMG_0415Alice worked through getting spares, Karin continually did better, Mariana hacked at killing pins with her arm strength, and everyone laughed and celebrated a relaxing evening of loving how well we did today, it was just plain old FUN!

We had reservations at 6:30 boarding time for the Dinner Dance Cruise, through The New York Skyline Dining Cruises,

IMG_0424specifically on a huge vessel called The Spirit.  A word about James Indiviglio, Cruise Manager.

GREAT.

He checked on us all night, announced birthdays for us – celebrated we were from Mexico City – he showed us that he appreciated us being there and he took care that the waitresses, waiters, EVERYONE treated us like royalty.  Also, he hoped us with directions getting back FASTER than we had before, and overall, from the students continually hugging us and thanking us, we knew he did an AMAZING job in making sure that was a HUGE and celebrated experience.  He was AMAZING and made sure we felt that way.  For sure, this was one of the best moments of celebrating our success in the first day of the conference.  This experience is marked in many of our memories for a VERY long time – and rightly so.  Between dancing the Congo line, to , dancing, see the amazing New York skyline a GREAT dinner, YES.  Check a HUGE success. IMG_0429

Getting back was amazing, as we waited a bit but taking the #23 to the metro station, and then not waiting forever to get back was a relief, getting back in around 11:15 was MUCH preferable and needed.  The rain coming down was not fun, BUT, made the night not so cold and being back early was a HUGE relief to get some rest. As I wrestle with the hundreds of pictures we took, please check back, they will be worth it!

Tuesday BLEW away…into Les Miserables!

Wow!  it IS Wednesdasy as I write this, and the notes the students have, and I have are way to long, so here is a synopsis for starters…Looking at the previous day’s post does about cover the events for the afternoon – Harlequin and the Soho Theatre and yet there is STILL more to say  –

1) IMG_1960 IMG_1966Meeting Harlequin Publishing to find out more on Adi Alsaid and publishing legal right, PR, just to name few things – this rocked everyone out and they had so many questions that were right on – WOW. Questions of printing for international audiences, legality issues, censorship, what PR really does, what editors REALLY do, how curriculum ties to the books we choose and read, were only a FEW of what was covered – amazing AMAZING Q & A on the part of the students and staff of Harlequin!  The books that Harlequin later gave us as previews – this would be just SOME of many that are upcoming to check out:

Lies We Tell OurSelves – by Robin Talley

The Break Up Artist by Philip Siegel

Another Little Piece of My Heart by Tracey Martin

Played by Liz Fichera

Iron Knight Iron Traitor &

The Lost Prince by Julie Kagawa

The Queen’s Choice by Cayla Kluver

Saving June and Speechless by Hannah Harringtone

The Juliet Spell by Douglas Rees

And again, emphasizing the look into the Soho Theatre was breathtaking…

IMG_19722) Meeting Mr Raphael Martin to see the impact of the Soho Theatre and off Broadway’s influence – and talking technical regarding musicals, “the business” and more – again, the students came prepared.

3) IMG_2328Les Miserables – I felt so anxious as we obtained our tickets, then we went to eat at a pizzeria IMG_2329nearby and many took advantage of the amazing bakery Pieface,   IMG_2330as we waited to get in line for the musical.  As we moved our way in to the Imperial Theatre, sure enough, on the backdrop we saw the portraits of Victor Hugo and indeed, throughout the musical they appeared.  The first half compared to the second half, I felt there was NO comparison, the second half was so much stronger, SO MUCH – I found there some forced moments in the musical as we worked through it, however, the props were amazing, the orchestra even mores, and the tour backstage helped explain so much about the musical – so much  🙂  I found myself so sad at truly the saddest moments and the actors did bring this right to us to feel each step of the way.  Overall, I found myself comparing the musical to the movie I saw but both helped enhance the amazing story being told through Les Miserables. Then I realized, I can HARDLY wait to see this on stage at our own school!  Following, no kidding, we ran into the neighboring theatre, where Miranda and a few others obtained autographs from Idina Menzel.  Screen Shot 2014-03-26 at 1.22.26 PMOverall an exciting night!

We made our way back to the hostel and reflected on how much occurred today – WHOA.  Major Whoa.

Tuesday – Already Two Days?

Today, due to the reroutings and the sudden changes of rerouting, tons of walking, and exhausting physical activity yesterday, we set out hoping the walking down to  minimum, and we arrived at the former Woolworth’s Building to meet with Harlequin Publishing. at 233 Broadway.

We walked into the lobby and noticed the amazing vaulted ceilings, amazing gold and intricate moldings of the elevator, and whoosh – the 10th floor is enveloped in white! This meeting today would be meeting Harlequin Publishing, also the publishers of Adi Alsaid (ASF Assistant basketball coach) AND overall Harlequin Publishing.  A whole team was on hand to greet us, that included Lauren in nonfiction, T.S. Ferguson, Emer Flounders in Publicity, Reka Rubin in the area of legality and rights, as well as Natasha Wilson the Executive Editor and of course Annie Stone, who led us throughout this whole adventure!

Harlequin provided some delicious bagels and spread for the staff, and it was exciting to see the trailer premiering Aldi Alsaid’s book Let’s Get Lost and knowing he was on campus among us.  Surreal at best, yet each one of us were so proud we were seeing him represented. Overall, we learned about the misconceptions about what an editor DOES do.  We learned that Annie first had worked at Harper Collins Publishing, and emphasized to find and do internships in the business.

The YA (Young Adult) branch of Harlequin actually was fairly new, and again, this brought out that editors do much more than the stereotypical reading and correcting.  So like what?  Relationships are made, connections are developed to protect the “baby” of each author, as well as directing the author into areas that are sellers to potential buyers of a market.  This extends into a company into Toronto, where Harlequin is based, so between New York and Toronto, alot happens in careers behind the scenes we don’t see!

In talking to T. S. Ferguson, an Associate Editor at Harlequin, we found his Masters’ had been in publishing – he started in Marketing.  He emphasized there is much negotiating in order to be the author’s advocate.  This helped bring out the realistic side of this position, opposed to the “sit and read all day or sit and correct writing all day” stereotype many think this job entails.

Emer Flounders helped represent the Publicity Manager side to things, and talked about the commercial/literary fiction representation needed to PR all aspects of writing.  He had attended NYU, and realized as he was told he talked too much to be an editor  🙂   that PR would be his path.  At 22 he had begun to meet author Tim O’Brien, and used the media world to increase awareness about books.  He analogized the publicity world like “asking for 10 dates and hearing back 9 no’s”, and that one yes makes all the effort worth it.

Reka Rubin was amazing when it came down to breaking down the rights regarding publishing – including subsidiary rights – which literally are selling rights to the versions of the author’s books.  The interesting aspects of this was the differing covers books take depending on if Turkish, German, etc as well as audio coming on the scene.  The game of guessing the language based on the cover shows the differing aspects many probably forget to think of.  Ms. Rubin mentioned the success of an audio auction that books had, and also shows the developing changes in the publishing realm.  I liked the fact that she emphasized “No day is the same” and I feel this is a huge plus in this business and as a career. Matching customers with countries’ customs is vital, and the book must reflect customs that are practiced, (a funny goose and book story followed).  Also, the acquisition of another language. as well as the experience in publishing prior to becoming a publisher are vital, the international component s VITAL.

Tasha Wilson, an executive director, emphasized the fact that even achieving a B.S. in Animal Science, wanting to be a trainer, did not push her from being involved in the field she is in now.  She attended Syracuse and studied magazine journalism.  She emphasized doing what you are passionate about is key.  Questions from Luis that showed a direction of Kindles and changing sales was addressed, and mentioned that with online/electronic version the covers of texts take a backseat.  Also, the challenge of thinking YA lit on variant forms is new to the business.  Romance genres were some of the very first to do online versions, and who is closest to the U.S. with electronic books?  The U.K. and Australia, but still the U.S. is the largest member utilizing this medium.

When Sonia asked what rights were we talking about language rights or well, kind of rights, we found out the license dictates the rights a book has regarding publishing.  Language also helps dictate this area of rights.

When Monica asked how the ideas originate,  Harlequin mentioned that usually, writers are only accepted with an agent, Adi was an unusual case having come with a published work already and aligning with Alloy Entertainment with his second book.

When Payton went on to ask what is the timeframe for a book – we discovered 6-9 months before the book entails the advertising, so much planning in involved.  There is MUCH followup as well with the author, and this led us to the area of censorship brought up by Sonia.

The controversial parts – if helping align with the plot – are okay but if nothing to do with the theme/plot, that when these items are brought into question.  Discrimination in texts such as racist language, if it goes with the direction of the plot of the book – is considered – yet, Harlequin does not freely let items in texts that would harm an audience, there are limitations on such things based on who the audience is geared for. The author always gets the final say on the book, ALWAYS.  Daniela asked if this was standard, and for the most part, nothing is really made unaware to the author before publishing.  Example of red flags would be language, racial situations, and we talked about Huckleberry Finn of awhile in this realm.  Then there seemed to be less issues than today now that there is a heightened awareness and sensitivity to social issues.

Even looking at the book, Good Night Moon, seeing the author’s picture with a cigarette raised questions of correctness to audiences, which was something we would not normally think about.

Karin asked how often author’s write to famous series, and it was mentioned that there is a “bubble” of this occurring following a famous series like Lord of the Rings or Hunger Games, and as of late, many YA Dystopian novels. The Giver, John Green, etc are examples of trendsetters with this type of following.

Victoria asked who has the power of decisions and changes, and the topics of public domain and in the case of Pride and Prejudice Zombies came up as an example of how a text can be manipulated due to public domain.

Sonia inquired about what the challenging and stressful aspects of this career were and the element of dealing with artistic personalities, as well as reading good books and bad books – (having to give all equal time), all came into that arena. Much time is spent after hours and that becomes a part of this job.

Luis proceeded to delve into asking What makes it a YA book?  Alot of crossover has occurred and when you are visiting this question, the issue of who the audience is becomes pertinent.  Books such as Oasis, Katie Klein were mentioned along with that different houses/genres represent different personalities in the form books take.

Luis followed up with asking if Harlequin has ever seen authors grow up is they published, and they mentioned J.K.Rowling in seeing that occur, but this seemed to be less of an obvious occurrence.

Izabel pursued the conversation with asking if what are elements that can/can’t be fixed, and the one aspect that everyone seemed to agree upon was the element of voice.  Either the voice fits a specific genre or it does not, but that is how important voice is to YA literature. I think the aspect I was MOST impressed about was the fact that these ASF students came up with lines of inquiry on their own – and delved into the meat of what makes a publishing firm career, and they showed an element of professionalism and interest that brought the reality of Harlequin to all of us.

We walked away MUCH more informed thanks to the students’ inquiry and the amazing time Harlequin gave us to do so today.

As if this was just a precursor, we moved to the Soho Theatre to meet with Soho General Manager, Raphael Martin.  We made it to the Soho Theatre, where he gave us programs for a show called Octoroon.  Mr. Martin emphasized the role of seeing plays, tons of plays, all over the world, to get experience with the business. He mentioned being a “Play Finder” was huge.  He always loved theatre and had just delved into it.

Being a dual citizen of the U.K and U.S. allowed him many chances to taken in countless opportunities. Who you know and building relationships became one of the biggest assets.  He saw the strengths to his position being an artistic Executive Director pulling from administrative marketing experience, manager experience of a theatre, and interning with experiences to do this.  He had started building scenery on sets to be exposed to the word of production.  He referred to what we would see in Les Miserable’s set with Victor Hugo’s paintings used.  (VERY COOL).

Being a member of EPA provided chances to audition, and things he took that he hated, (aside from not hating literature) he said actually provided a wider base of interest in topics that could be relevant when seeking out plays. He moved to New York because his job got him here, and he mentioned the Manhattan Theatre Club which is VERY surreal.  He recommend to see as many plays as possible, send emails, try to formulate relationships to get into this business.

Of all plays produced, his favorite genre was being new plays that have been coming out.  He also addressed that having musicals at the Soho Theatre was difficult since the Soho has neighbors above them, he likes musicals but prefers plays overall. Aspects of a four wall rental with a theatre seem to be around 6000.00 USD a week, which is a deal.  Minimally, this is rented 2 weeks and longer depending on the show.

The comparison of Off Broadway compared to Broadways shows, as asked by Alejandra, came down to these distinctions –

1 – Broadway is for profit as a main interest, and Off Broadway gets new writers and actors into the light.

2- Mass appeal occurs during Broadway shows, and Off Broadway is more for risks being taken on various works.

3- The numbers of seats in a theatre is a distinction between the two. Also, the elements of Economy of Scale are at play with these two, and there are even OFF- OFF Broadway shows that tend to be a little more on the wild and weird side 🙂 Off Broadway uses a variety of media forms to advertise, such as Online, Facebook, Twitter, Flyers, fundraising, gala events, etc.

Reviews appearing in place of ads to help promote Off Broadway as well.  Seating 74 people a night is excellent when good reviews are evident and not so easy when bad reviews ensure, even in New York. As an actor, it is vital to have an agent that can seek out opportunities.

Without acting it would be necessary to get a Master of Arts to be involved actively.  When asked if there was an awards like the Tony’s, there is something called the Obie Award, which is the off Broadway version of a Tony. When asked where he studied, Mr. Martin studied at Oberlin in Ohio.

Mr. Martin was curious on the reactions of New York, and some mentioned it was cleaner than they thought it would be, more spacious, quiet, different than the west coast, cold, and it was mentioned that if most people did not like New York it was thought they WOULD like California, just showing the differences in the two. When asked what skills would be needed in theatre the following were given: see a TON of plays, read plays, and imagine the plays as a production in your head.

Luis brought up a good line of inquiry in asking if there were other “hubs” of areas known for theater and the following were brought up: Minneapolis involving the Guthrie Theatre and being well-funded. Chicago theatre representing a rough/loud approach to theatre in the style, Steppenwolf style.  This was not the theatre cruelty genre, a little less a spectacle. Also, Austin, Texas was amazing with the Zach Scott as an icon. Being able to wander the set currently on the Soho stage, as well as seeing first hand the Off Broad theatre scene was a huge look into what Off Broadway brings to New York, and Mr. Martin was accommodating beyond belief. With these two behind the scenes Q&A opportunities, the careers that jelled with what students were doing currently added to what is possible in New York and beyond the stage!

Monday Monday…

Wow, believe it or not, students were up EARLY!  It was enough time to get a bearing of our location the morn, get them out and orient themselves, then meet back and head to Central park and we made it to the Metropolitan Museum of Art – where they are now soaking it all in, like a small city in one building here.  We saw the dismal St. Patrick’s Parade, no worth looking at with the protesting so it was just well, pitiful compared to before, but rightfully so due to the protests.

I NEVER REALIZED HOW LARGE THE METROPOLITAN MUSEUM WAS – A CITY AMONG ITS OWN…We did manage to see the parade but a dismal one form the museum so the greatest phrase, “Let’s go back to see some art” from Payton assumed us that there was much to see that impacted us.  Also, the levels, even though three floors, was enough to fill again, a small city – AMAZING.  Also, we found out, after meeting at 1:30 PM – as we exited that, (and running into a Latino American music group) as at first heading UP TOWN insead of Downtown of a block, that the parade was actually still going on 3 hours later than normal, lol.  And here came the parade – in its glory of all clans – the colleges, and sea of Green, so as we progressed to Southern Central Park – ALL the parade appeared in front of us – like crazy and loud and ALL Irish – signs like”England get out of Ireland” and “It isn’t freedom if you are prejudiced” showed the discontent with excluding Gay Group members from the parade as well as the situations with Ireland and Englad that have dated back to history.

We finally made it to 5th Avenue – and the students were set loose one block from St. Patrick’s Cathedral – shopping, searching, investigating everything from the ice skating rink, Rockefeller Center, and more.  Since the parade was later than normal, the streets were blocked off at corners causing us to take extra longer ways to get around so slight delays impacted us and increased our walking.

After meeting at 1:30, we headed back to the metro, back to the hostel, for a little, lies than an hour due to the delays) – and got ready for East Village.  We headed back out on the metro, hit the Big Gay Ice Cream store, Two Boots, and ultimately the NuYorkian Cafe until 11:30, and back home.

The Open Mic was a wide range of talent, surprise, and an underwear wearing grandpa with a guitar, but live and right in your face – as usual, very lively and all over the U.S. another represented. The way back, um, wow.  We were diverted to an express train, that went ultimately 125th, where we had to get back on the there side and come back to 103rd, and at this point, we were DYING – exhausted and tired of being rerouted and occasionally taking the wrong way, we ran to the hostel and died in our beds.  We decided we’d lessen the load on Tuesday, open up time for more people to study, relax, get working, breathe, and explore locally with no rush and let our feet and bodies recover.

The best part of the day?  The capability of these student to soak inso much art and beauty, and despite the many inconvenient parts of the trip that happened, they pushed through and got through so much – crossing the first half of Central Park in 20 minutes (that is a record) as well as covering at least 15 miles – this group covered most most would only dream about in a day.  DREAM.  And they did it with a determination and energy that few to none would ever be able to contain.

New York CSPA 2014…

4:15 AM kept beeping at me like a blaring fire jam…(That should make English teacher’s happy that I used a metaphor) – yet as I ran around, walked the dogs (with a bit of sadness in leaving them) – (FORTY TWO – I was 42 today!  – AGH the time flies!)

I just made the taxi at 5:10ish as he was waiting for me at the door.  Early but nice to be on my way!  SO nice to be on my way the I left credit cards behind, yet, I knew that leaving my credit cars behind was probably a smart move as this would be less of major bang I’d put into my money, lol. but I was lucky to have stashed funds in to my existing checking so no prob.

AT the airpot at 5:45 AM – and Tiana came through and slowly everyone trickled in with their Repentino. sweatshirt – most having boarding passes and having their immigration done – yes, this was easy and amazing – the small probs with tickets not being printed was not that bad at all, and having Rocio at the airport actually was a HUGE help with the small probs we did have.  Within minutes, believe it or not, the issues with immigration, paper gathering, credential gathering, were behind us.  Not thinking that was possible, but yes possible and it was true. The smiles on their faces as they wished me a happy birthday was AMAZING and they made my morning, and everyone’s parents (including one Sonia’s Mom whose birthday was TODAY! – were gracious and so amazing, they helped with this alot too, and that was an understatement.

We managed to all get through security, yet, Alia realized at immigration her FM3 was still with her father, and they wanted this.  Her father luckily did not forget to still be at the airport, and he was able to get this to her, one victory!

But wait – Cassandra’s carry one was overweight, so we go her through, and then, Nina, was told she had the wrong immigration form, and we went back to get it again, and then, as luck would have it, the plane told us all were boarded and they were taking no more when we came back trying to board, yet, no worries – we got on and this was amazing to add a little birthday twist to the trip before hitting the actual airspace, and we settled in  🙂

(I have to be honest, I was overweight at CHECK IN – so I was bad from the very beginning!) 🙂  However, I still liked this birthday alot thanks to the people around me.

We settled into the plane, and then ta da!  OFF!  I saw something I never saw on Aeromexico, we had movies built into the seats, and chatting capability with every seat. Yet of course, my movie froze and my chat didn’t work, lol.  But I did clip a peek at a GREAT racing movie I wanted to see in the movies and saw everyone else’s version of Percy – so it was all good.  🙂

Finally – before it was even beginning it seemed (minus the amazing and crazy energy Sam and Fiona had the whole trip) we made it to New York!  I called my Mom, and we all settled into getting ready to be in New York – we actually ran through customs easily and grabbed people’s bags quickly, and boom! – we were through!  A slight delay – 40 minutes – waiting for the designated shuttle, Izabel lost her scarf and we frantically looked for it AND ta da!  WE FOUND IT!  YES!  all was saved, we got onto Go Shuttle, and had the driver as a tour guide, AND, the students presented me with a 250 pesos certificate for Books Under the Volcano – amazing and so thoughtful! – and we made it to Jazz on the Park.

Another word, first year at Jazz in the Park for Mexico students and we found Dane Orhi, a performer we liked and we grabbed sent to Delaware for Battle of theBands, and went on to do HUGE things in California – so a little seed we pulled and that grew into a forest about Jazz on the Park – We checked in speedily, got into the rooms, and began to meet in the lobby for Mel’s Hamburgers.  Let me tell you about this.  Mel’s WOW.  They were waiting for us despite getting there at 8:15 instead of 7:30 – and we have STORIES.  Miranda fell unbeknownst to me, on the way in, scratched her knee badly, but the manager, Pedro Fajardo, the assistant manager, grabbed Peroxide and bandages without even thinking for her.  While she doctored her cut, I ran to the pharmacy and grabbed Neurosporen and bandages, and she was set!

Now a word about Pedro – He was called into day and had been here since 11:00 AM since the other manager was getting survey getting, I think – her appendix put – can you believe it?  We like to think he was there thanks to fate and he was quick, efficient, and gracious!

Thick milkshakes, huge burgers, and fries bigger than we even managed, and tons of food.  But add to this the amazing friendliness of Jamal Clark Turpin – who was patient and amazing throughout the WHOLE crew, and serviced us every step of the way, even with the check process trying to getting it all together.  AMAZING experience and the assistant manager together were AMAZING, and the students, through singing happy birthday to me with a cake, and just being patient, were just as great – this was the reason we stopped here first all the time.  Mel’s Hamburgers was truly a class act and these two employees where why, they showed the mentaility of Mel’s Hamburger’s we have come to know.

Screen Shot 2014-03-18 at 8.16.33 AM

After finishing, around 10:00 PM, we hit the local nearby Rite Aid, and grabbed items, and contemplated hitting Times Square an yes, it was COLD – 🙂  However we decided to hold off on the metro card purchase for tomorrow as e would see it, and 0f course, we would do on Monday and get warm and rest for Sunday night.

Yes, thanks to Sam, Fiona, and Nina, they grabbed me a combo of a Mexican statue, chocolates, and Kaluha candy finished the wish for a happy birthday.  You know the cool thing?  I had my birthday all ready just being with these great students –

Hang tight because we have MAJOR photos, but I need to find my camera cord and will add them later today for all to see I envision buying a camera card reader and will do so today.  You will be PLEASANTLY surprised.

Maybe it is me but I notice the events around the world on the news MUCH more – and wait, I see a television in Mexico where I do not watch in Mexico since there is so much to do, -yet the news on the Malyasina plane that is possibly in the Australia area, questions around the route being rerouted by the pilot, the noises within Russia and neighboring areas, men saved from a  truck that went into a ravine form a helicopter and much much more – and a flight to Mexico diverted to Denver rerouted – I am mesmerized with the news going on the news.   Yet, here we are, ready to make news of our own with a passion for art, writing, and reaching out to others.  I think this is a pretty good place to be, and watch out Shamrock Shakes, I am going to rock the world of Shamrock Shakes today.

Today!  Central Park, Metropolitan Museum,

5th Avenue, the St. Patrick’s Day Parade – tonight – Two boots and Open Mic!  About the parade – The Guinness company protests the ban on openly gay marches pulling out of St. Patrick’s Parade, so more controversy on the parade as well today!

We will be grabbing phone chips and phones today to get everyone hooked up 🙂

Thank you for the birthday wishes which tells me – how LUCKY I am to be surrounded by amazing family and friends, no matter where I go, each of you are there – how lucky am I?  Pictures to come!

Thanks!
More coming soon!
