1) Sidewalks that take water and let it flow from the sides! As seen in the Smithsonian American Art Museum courtyard, a creative way to divert the rain was actually a form of art as well – loved this idea. Hard to see maybe, but you see the streams coming from the sides of the sidewalk section.
2) Spring for Poetry in Takoma Park
I love the fact that poetry in placed all around neighborhoods, LOVE. Check a look below – I would love to be able to do this all around areas of Mexico!
3) Little Free Library in the community.
I LOVE this idea, made of recycled materials, since I had been here three days, I saw materials exchanged within the free libraries at eat twice, what a GREAT idea!
4) Poetry in Motion on New York Subways and cabs!
I love the fact that when you are on the subway in New York, you can have the option of reading or read the poetry that appears on the subway – would love to see this in Mexico.
5) Eco Bici in Mexico City and Capital Bike share in Takoma. Takoma Park’s version of the ride/share program that is found in Mexico City (Ecobici) allows you to have a one day membership
as well , I love this idea. In Chicago it is DIVY. I think the draw to bikes in the city is excellent for a way to conserve on the amount of carbon footprints we lave behind as well as encouraging a tighter sense of community. In mexico City, I like the combination of the card that is tied to the metro, that is tied to the metro bus (just do not lose that card!). Love. Check out the exciting info below about this program:
“Capital Bikeshare puts over 2500 bicycles at your fingertips. You can choose any of the over 300 stations across Washington, D.C., Arlington and Alexandria, VA and Montgomery County, MD and return it to any station near your destination. Check out a bike for your trip to work, Metro, run errands, go shopping, or visit friends and family. Join Capital Bikeshare for a day, 3 days, a month, a year or try our new daily key option, and have access to our fleet of bikes 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The first 30 minutes of each trip are free. Each additional 30 minutes incurs an additional fee.”
6) Ordering on line in Mexico City and now Relayfoods in MD.
I love that food can be bought and delivered in DF (Superama), restaurants, and it was refreshing to see the choice of carnivore, vegetarian, and other healthy diets now being available through Relayfoods in Takoma Park, MD
and expanding to other ares. The fact that if you go in person, and for the first time get 25.00 of food for 1$ is a great incentive to encourage more healthy eating and convenience to do so. Love these initiatives.
