Diving Into the Deep…

Thanksgiving has always been about family to our family, celebrating it and knowing our thanks has always been built upon a dependable meal, dinner talk that always reminded me of the events, memories and the feelings that brought us all together.

I always have played my visits, expeditions, adventures safely, with a group of people I knew, or the places I did not know but never venturing further then a gut sense of safety. For the first time this trip, I had decided to go somewhere I only heard about – Chacahua, as well as staying somewhere I did know but on my own.

The results were quite unexpected but priceless.  In meeting the staff of One Love, I was able to find assistance to finding how to get to Chacahua, through several option, which in turn led me to new friends found in Randy and Chris, they led me through a location I screen-shot-2016-12-20-at-8-56-49-amnever knew existed, and to experience a beauty in nature I had seen in various spots in Mexico, but never knew existed in a place called Chacahua.  I felt more than rewarded in seeing the untouched environment I found in Chacahua – and feeling inside the appreciation of how Chris and Randy respected such experience.  Fishing, screen-shot-2016-12-20-at-8-59-07-amseeing the sun kiss the horizon in the morning, the sun kiss the horizon at night, experiencing the naturalness of a lagoon that breathed so much life, words certainly fall short and the memory is the gift that remains and is priceless.

Yet – discovering a new Puerto Escondido was a gift in itself as well.  Meeting Andrea, who had planned on traveling to South America, and then sitting down and discussing how life, the spiritual, and more are all connected on her every day walk in life.  Victor Campos who will turn the ideas of construction, art, and a sense of community on it’s head with his organizational, creative, and innovative approaches.  Nina, who, from Switzerland, did not hesitate to connect me with Victor, as well as talk freely about what the future could indeed hold – then the last evening, were we celebrated the possibilities that were before screen-shot-2016-12-20-at-8-57-04-amus, the magic of the air, the sand, the beach, Puerto Escondido – this was what going outside of your circle of comfort, meeting individuals that were unknown to you previously, and experiencing how others can be discovered and added to your own experiences – and sharing these together – Thanksgiving took on a whole new meaning only adding to what the meaning of family meant.

img_9821

I only look forward to what all of these individuals together will be able to do with our ideas discovered – and out together, collectively.  The appreciation of what all of the above were able to provide, introduce, and represent is priceless in itself.  Making this experience of Chacahua with flowing beaches until the eye can see, Puerto Escondido represented in a totally different light, and individuals that will go on to make changes that together we have a vision for- Thanksgiving goes on to represent something more than we can recreate, and for that I am thankful.  Little did I know what would be in store for the Christmas holiday.

Suddenly Sudden…

“Harry!”  I am ready to go!”  Groggily waking up and realizing the plan to stay most of the day – another day of surfing, etc but I realized Randy, who I just met, had had enough and wanted to return to the comforts of modern facilities as well, and I understood/understand that.  We were in the middle of virgin beaches, virgin communities, 100% local and the most amazing beautiful natural elements – and also the basic basic units without big stores, big name companies and resorts and sometimes it is difficult to make that transition for a period of time.  I was finding I needed more of this to dip into who I was in discovering who I was after a rocky up and down history of life events and changes, this place was the most natural thinking tank and sit back and reflect on your life, you could ever want.

While I was not quite ready to go back, it happened that way, and being jolted out of this world so fast and heading back to Puerto Escondid0 made me look in perspective of how amazing and lucky I was that this all worked out – meeting Chris and Randy and discovering this paradise.

Upon coming back to Puerto Escondido, we ate breakfast and were able to see this huge gathering of policia discussing important matters, and protectors of this group holding the guns around their group, even though we see this alot in Mexico with the emptying of ATM’s and transits between currency exchanges in banks and you see guns being weilded for protection publicly, everyone once in a while it still seems surreal.

Randy showed me his house which was a fortress in Puerto, protected by his own surrounding area and seeing the whole of Puerto Escondido below – it was breathtaking and I was able to see what could be in each of our lives if we wanted it.  The last day in Puerto Escondido was amazing and I loved staying in One Love Hostel.

What I neglected to elaborate on was meeting Victor in Puerto, hearing about his artistic local project working with Puerto Escondido residents, and seeing how we can meet halfway on his project idea with my project ideas – also – meeting Nina again and we all went out to discover the part of Puerto I never explored – la Punta – it is amazing at night, AMAZING.  We descended on the restaurant Lychee, it was surreal.  We spent a long time there and the sand floor, the wood tables, the low lighting, the magic of Puerto, the amazing food, the amazing friends, this all was completely a send off on the last night of Puerto Escondido, and then some, it was magic.

screen-shot-2016-12-19-at-8-26-46-amThe lighting, the warmth of the night, the feel of being in such an exotic place with new friends, it was completely magic.  For once, on this trip I delved into the unknown SO MANY TIMES, and came back to the surface, with so many new perspectives from so many  newly met people.  I will credit those experiences in the next blog post recapping this whole Thanksgiving Break experience narrowed down to people, but, being screen-shot-2016-12-19-at-8-27-26-amable to combine Chacahua and Puerto Escondido in the same day was pretty amazing, even if I was returning to the last evening at Puerto for the Thanksgiving Break.

Chacahua and Thanksgiving Paradise Revisited…

Day 2 of Chacahua over Thanksgiving Break –

img_96094:45 (AM) happens for me at home frequently, and I bury that alarm when it comes to vacation.Sometimes. But fishing, not so much.  Yet, Thanksgiving morning, believe it or not, an exception. And not for Black Friday pre sales believe it or not.

We were up, we had fishing reels, we had gas, we had the boat. Onto the water for fishing, and fished we were going. I always truly dreamed of getting up that early to be on the water, and yet, never happeneimg_9630d. Until Thanksgiving 2016, and overall, yes worth it. As the sun rose and we captured it,
the water from dawn to midday was amazing. With a small catch of img_96822 small fish and not a lot of bites, but a sighting of dolphins, the scenery of the Lagoon all around us, and the feel of the img_9647water – the smell of the ocean, and the warmth of the sun on our backs – this was a great start to a new Thanksgiving experience, one not to forget.img_9711

After trolling through the Lagoon and returning around 11:00 AM, it was close to siesta. We found our hammocks, our designated beach spots, and it was truly Siesta time. The lazy feeling of the sun, the tide, the sand – it’s all you need for a perfect day.   It’s funny, one of the first times since I can remember with truly no connection to internet, to countless emails working on projects, to organizing this organizing that, produced amazing results. Two novels down, taking in our surroundings with amazing photography, taking in new friendships and appreciating gifts that can’t be physically counted brings the actual day of Thanksgiving closer to the reality it was meant to be, and this is outside of the United States. I kept having to pinch myself to realize I was in Mexican waters – as similar aspects at times reminded me of being on the beach along the eastern coast of Delaware – and yet each time I caught the occasional Spanish melody on the air- I realized how southern Mexico I was and how much has occurred in the last five years to draw me in, and I have only seen half of what Mexico has to offer in that time.

img_9765-1Nearing the times where I thought much of the football games, that were on at the time, (somewhere far way it seemed!) and img_9752watching Chris catch a couple waves on the lagoon, we decided it was time for dinner. Thank again to the expertise of Chris and Randy, a fire pit grill was started, rice was initiated, and a full plate steak with rice was ready, we (Chris, Randy, proprietor of the beach cabanas, Antoine) and we sat down and devoured one of the most nontraditional, yet refreshing beach meals to be marked on a Thanksgiving. The combination of the meal, the opportunity to relax, as well as the fellowship of celebrating a day that takes so many things into account – and presents them in such a paradise, how could you possibly top that?

Plans were made to find the supreme surfing spots tomorrow down the coast and end a Friday the way it should be, celebrating the moments that made this week a complete success.

“You can TRY to put them into words, but the experience is forever.”

Jumping into the unknown to a place called Chacahua -(picking up from this post – https://harrybrake.com/2016/11/25/9800/)

Getting directions that seemed a BIT elusive, written on a receipt, receipt.JPGbut possible.  So far so good. One Love – Banorte – 35 pesos, close. Waiting at Banorte – something didn’t seem right, so I inquired at a transit station to other locations, “Esquina, directo, azul .” Yes, I saw the blue bus sign I waited, the next three buses, not what I was looking for. And wasn’t it a van I was looking for? I was restless, I bought a 25 peso torta at the local pasterleria and noticed just 2 stores down from Banorte, another van transit. I asked a attendant from yet another transit the location of the vans to Zappolito, and yes, he pointed to the van station across the street. Got it. Exactly 45 pesos. So Banorte yes, but BESIDE Banorte, a white van station, that is your ticket to Zappolito, on the way to Chacahua.

On our way with 9 other people in the van, roughly 40 minutes later as I saw the ocean race to my left through the window, we stopped at a town called Rio Grande, truly familiar to the Old West towns, narrow main street, lined with stores, with one small exception. Half cutaway Volkswagens that were scooters, similar to the type you would see in India – they filled the streets everywhere, this Rio Grande’s taxi, and they were everywhere, I mean EVERYWHERE. We stopped, the lady beside me returned from the store we were resting at, with a small cardboard Whiska’s box, but inside you could hear the chirping of the chicks she just purchased. My mind only wanted to think of positive reasons she was buying those chicks, and I just decided they would have the freedom to run around her yard, however, my gut told me something different.

The next stop was an empty, side of the road station for crossing to the next leg of the trip. I crossed the highway, and found out for 60 pesos I could go right to the mouth for a collectivo that would take me to the mainland. So I was beginning to deviate from my planned cost to reach Chacahua, but y gut told me yes, this is the way to discovery! I jumped in the single taxi, and on our way the drive told me how everything was pulled back in time at Chacahua, time had literally stopped he told me. You will love it. My anticipation grew. He told me about the desire for the boat people (as Javier had called them when we called two weeks ago) that ferry you across the water to partake in that tour, and yes, I knew in the back of my mind they would direct me to the cabanas they wanted me to stay at. This worried me as I purposely was taking a set amount of pesos to avoid having the whole lot “disappear” and to impose ny self made budget of a vacation under 4000.00 pesos for the week. However, I knew what would be would be.

Into the empty lot.JPGWe arrived at the very empty mouth of the collectivo lot, , three

At the collectivo dock.JPGsimple motorboats, a store that consisted of open fencing and tin on one side, palm fronds on the top, and two very relaxed locals on hammocks. What was not so traditional was who I would come to know as Chris.JPGChris, an Australian local who had his stack of supplies read at the edge of the store, heading to the mainland. His thick accent cut in asking, “Where you from? Where ya headed?” (EXACTLY OUT OF CROCODILE DUNDEE ACCENT – NO JOKE!) – Perhaps the nicest guy I EVER met, that I never met, out of nowhere.

His discovery of me heading to Chacahua, and his heading to the mainland and offering me a ride to go with him, his friend, and supplies, was a no brainer. It just felt right, I said yes immediately, and he told me it will be a 30-40 minute wait as they fixed the boat. I told him obviously I was not in a hurry obviously, and just waited in silence with the locals that spoke great levels of their native Spanish while I again listened is as much as I could.

Another taxi pulled up, a group of people exited with suitcases, and the two relaxed locals immediately came to life grabbed their belongings and got them on the boat as part of the collective to head to the mainland. They motioned for me to come as part of the collectivo but I was grateful for my gut, I wanted to stick with Chris who made me his offer, and luckily, he was there at the store gathering items when the “boat people” wanted me to come to him. I told Chris I would wait for him – and while this seemed to not settle well with these two pilots of the collective, my mind had been settled long before with the deal to go with Chris based on where they would direct me to stay and the price they would charge me, I screamed Gringo and having a set amount of funds only, I was guarding it closely to last until I returned to Puerto, so I COULD return to Puerto, with no expectations of an ATM to where I was headed. Chris was looking out for me in letting me choose his offer.

The boat was fixed! I helped Chris load up supplies he was bringing back to his beach, packages of bread, cases of milk, jugs of water, suitcases, his arrival from Australia back to his home here at Chacahua. I found his friend Randy also coming with us, his two Schanuzers, and some excitement as we boarded. We were in, but Rikki and Lucy were not, and they found a chicken. More than finding, they wanted the smallish chicken. They began chasing the chicken and one of them, not sure if it was Rikki or Lucy, bit into the chicken as Chris and Randy tried to stop them from proceeding further, I sensed instant knowing how my hounds would react.   Yet somehow, they were able to stop them with just a mouthful of feathers obtained an safely on the boat without a second chance to make good on the first attempt.

The ride, AMAZING (see below the link).  VERY similar to the trips we had taken on 9th grade, new student retreats in places I would never find on my own. We began formalities of finding out Randy owned a hotel at Puerto, Chris and him had been friends and they were making plans to purchase a sailboat and sail across the Atlantic, the details were just exhilarating to see these two so settled in a place so separated from everyone in Chacahua, yet settled in Puerto where they had met. As we cleared the amazing views of the lagoon with Augustine at the motor, who I would discover owned where I would be deciding to stay, we entered the mangroves. If I thought the crossing was brilliant, I had seen nothing yet. NOTHING.

The boat dove into the mangroves, and cranes were everywhere. Low lying mangroves and paths that seemed like a maze greeted us as we weaved through mangroves that separated the lagoon from….what ? I did not know. After about 10 minutes, and passing 100 pesos to Chris for gas, (I believe I would have been charged a lot more for the crossing and no tour of the layout as I was seeing before me) – we exited the mangroves and Voila!   An open channel and a wide range of cabanas and a smallish line of food stands, empty now, and a town greeted us! This was TRULY out of a movie, only this was real life, this was AMAZING. I realized I did not have to get out of the boat at this point to realize what an amazing experience I had stumbled on. Literally. We passed a gentleman that waved stiffly and the boat turned around – we were picking up Augustine’s father.

We stopped on the shore of this narrow channel, for the pick up and weaved our way through a neighboring channel, where we came past another individual in a hammock. Augustine was waving to him, asking if he would meet us on the next shore and drive us with the supplies to Chris’s house. He began to get out of the hammock, as we made our way down the shore.

Exactly as planned, we landed, got out and there was maybe one of the most rusted out Toyota-like pickups I ever saw in my LIFE. Yet, we loaded the bushels of oranges, groceries, everything, including four people and two schnauzer’s, and we were off. Past a sandy road that had individuals coming out of their homes to see what and who was coming down the road, this was amazing, this was a step in the past and rewinding the clock – definite – just as I had been nestled in the woods of the National Allegheny Forest in Genessee pay and no one would have been able to find me, I had swapped a forest for a beach that existed in no one’s mind at all. We came to the beach, our driver switched to four wheel drive, and onto the beach we went and all I can say is breath taking. The pictures do not do this justice AT ALL – AT ALL – and yet we passed cabana after cabana, after cabana. We arrived at one stand out cabana literally 40 feet from the ocean, unloaded and my mind began to catch up with what was happening.

Okay, I met a local from Australia, local here now for the past four years, by chance also his friend who owns a hotel in Puerto, who happened to be at the mouth of the collectivo at the SAME time as me, and this all worked out. I could not figure out HOW, but 30 minutes later, when we are introduced to the cabanas we would be staying in, for 200 pesos, and the hammocks, the restaurant that was open to our every need at a moments notice, the four of us at a table served up a concoction of OJ and who knows what – and saluding each other, I realized how insane, how crazy how Repentino. this had become, and yet it had become something I NEVER NEVER would have dreamed of happening. I did not know Chachua before this, and now, seeing the fisherman in their boats in the ocean before me, the mountains rising up and a body of endless water in front of me that stretched as far as the eye could see, seeing NO ONE, NO ONE in sight at all except four kings on a beach – I knew this would be a Thanksgiving I would never ever forget in all my memory.

burger night 1.JPGAs dusk began, Chris disappeared into the kitchen of the restaurant,

and 30 minute slater produced one of the largest burgers I had ever seen in my life, layered with onion, cheese, bacon, mayo ketchup – there are no words. So here I am, in a cabana layered with palm fronds,

my own shower, the beach licking and whispering to my ears, a FAN and electric no less on a most deserted beach that is untouched by modernity, owned by Augustine, watched over by Chris for months at a time, welcomed in by Randy, Chris’ friend who never had met me ever, and realizing that there is NO REASON AT ALL these three individuals should have offered me anything at all. Yet, they did- they offered me more than I should have been offered and gave me paradise. When I say paradise I literally mean a paradise I would, should, and could have only thought would be in a magazine or a book as a continuation of the end of the movie Shawshank Redemption.

IMG_9617.JPGYet here I am and as the sun is rising above the coast of this untouched, unknown, unheard of by many beach, I am in wonder at how the meaning of Thanksgiving has become truly a mesh of hundreds of amazing people who have just been there, in a moment’s surprised notice, and turned everything into one HUGE surprise. Colleagues, students, friends, unknown before friends that have become family, and family, and 100 more reason to be thankful for things I can not expect. This is only day 1 at Chacahua. 5:30 AM fishing is on the ticket and we are headed out to fill the boat – until then – know Thanksgiving is also full of surprises, sand, cabanas, beaches, and paradise. Thank you everyone for again, helping me be the adventurous, cautious, risk taking, optimistic person I am becoming every day.

Day 2 of the experience in this amazing AMAZING lagoon, untouched?  I am steel trying to put it all together but coming soon!  🙂

If anything I have learned, HOPE IS a good thing, and going into the unknown, it is a bit scary, BUT, the benefits that result?  You can TRY to put them into words, but the experience is forever.

Bringing it to THEM – A Second of Day of Radium Girls Discoveries

beginning-set-start“Are you going tonight?”  A pause.  “It IS the same cast though…”

As I was asked on Friday if I would be also attending the second show and second night of Radium Girls, I thought, well I mean, this IS the same cast.  However, the look on the casts faces when they were asking me? – In fact this set of a chain reaction of realizations.

Hold on with me for a bit, this IS about the second night of Radium Girls, but I need to branch off for a minute, but you’ll see the connection, HONEST!

Becoming a librarian from an English teacher was a huge step, and most that had not been a teacher before, or had been and had no previous librarian experience would fall into the trap of assuming what a librarian does and doesn’t do.  I was fortunate enough to have just wanted to volunteer at the Lewes, DE public library for a half of a semester to understand what actually was part of the day of a librarian.  In addition, I had started courses at the Mansfield University – c/o Laura Bush Scholarship for promoting librarians in the United States.  I had seen the differences in myself as a person, and the stereotypes people have of librarians – and I had even felt them among fellow librarians.  I had posted every discussion on our assignments with a pop culture- connected title before I delved into serious discussions.  This was not even truly an appreciated asset among colleagues, they felt I was “not serious” and “too social” to be a fellow librarian.  I took this as a compliment and from that day – I knew – I would need to set the record straight of what was expected of librarians, their goals, their possibilities and confine the stereotypes of the librarian to the rubbish.

Having previous experience as a community college instructor, English teacher, and tutor, I had been able to see later complications of what students struggle, both at a college and high school level.  In seeing this, I was determined to hit the areas that would two things, allow the library to be an area of interest to all individuals, not a cloister room of secrets, but a student, faculty, alumni, and patron union,  and to target the daunting piles of needs that always fall before a teacher.

Organization, planning, research, inventory, organizing, statistics, surveys, calculating, budgeting, are just a small part of what a librarian does.  In a 21st Century World, and as an advisor of a student publication alongside an amazing-possibility-filled library, doing almost anything the way it has always been done, expecting the category of “that is not my job” to fill your day, and waiting for people to come to you, for them to come to the library – that doesn’t exist anymore.

Going to the very areas that you are not aware of, familiar with, or a regular participant in, be it sports, be it publications, be it the classroom, be it major events in your school, as a Librarian (but what I call and love better – a Media Specialist) if you embrace that old, outdated excuse, “That is not my Job” and realize, there is NOTHING that is not your job anymore, then the world becomes a playground for invention and you, as a media Specialist can be in the middle of it all, or behind a desk watching it all.

I thought all this in a fraction as members of the cast stood in front of me and I realized, attending any production, be it Winter, Spring, and going to every show?  I learned something about showing my gratitude to the crew that makes this possible for us, I learned that I learned something new every night, and I learned I actually saw the students grown in front of me, be it in the stage, in the tech booth, on the stage crew, and behind the curtain, I opened myself up to something they were teaching me every night.  They deserved my utmost attention, inside the classroom, outside the classroom, on the field, on the stage, in the library, and between laptops as they designed pages for our upcoming publication.  I could focus on being the best “librarian” ever, but if the students are left out of the equation and bot having fun, being motivated, inspired, and finding what they want from my  profession, it all is for nought.

There are COUNTLESS definitions of being an educator I love, but one of the best is respecting the very students that make every day at school a new day, and that demands our respect in the form of attending and participating and motivating those very students in so many ways, that we should never be a hesitation to determine WHEN.  Every day I have made that a goal, my own personal life has been that much better, and I have never lacked for a personal life thanks to the positive attitude those around me keep providing.

Radium Girls? I overheard one of the cast stating this first night was the first night they felt as a cast- crew, they all felt it was clicking, syncing, and just they were all one. I think was also was in line with the actual first production and how well all the actors fell into their roles so naturally.  On the second night, you FELT this energy emanating from the stage.  It WAS even stronger and fluid than the first show, and seeing the fluid movements and decisions of the stage crew between scenes, the smoothness of the transitions light, sound, and tech movements that were made – it was one solid success and I STILL witnessed details I missed the first night.  The students are truly, one moving wave that get stronger as each tide of audience members support them, educators being a huge factor in this.

See below some of the changes from the first night productions – and this last night? make it one you will never forget – because the Drama Club, ASF Theatre Company, Tech Club, and advisors will not let you forget anything you see, anytime soon.  The very characteristics I vowed to meet and rise above as just a “librarian” the cast and crew of Radium Girls have done in two solid nights, the third will be no exception.

Adrian – It almost seemed as the determination and stubbornness increased in this second night, and his volume raised even more.  His asset to the overall play increased tenfold just as the board of the U.S. Radium Corporation were doing everything in their power to do the same with their own profits, at the treatment towards others.  He brings this home 100%.   Representing Arthur Roeder was a masterpiece and the stream of consciousness that results.

Ana PaulaAgain, as a simple narrator, her level of bringing a a consciousness to the audience still remains, and yet, she appears even stronger and determined to get this message between the lines across to the audience.  Aside from her clothes matching the era perfectly, her versatility in all roles can’t be overlooked.

Anna VictoriaRepresenting the voice and tone of an era, again, Ana is able to bring the tone of a generation out.  Wanting her to raise her volume a bit more, the audience in the last night will truly grab the accent and voice of how a majority felt when they see here multiple places on stage.

Analise – The straight forward, no nonsense demeanor that becomes the face of the U.S. Radium Corporation only takes a moment to be 100% dead on or 100% not fitting.  Analise, as a clerk representing U.S. Radium Corporation, and worker from within, is still able to show her versatility.  I like the brief shock she shows when she is told the worker in question from the role played by Annabella has died, but I think she will increase that moment of shock even stronger for the last performance.  It is awesome to see again, how another cast member can bounce from one role to another.

Andrea – The ease with how Andrea transitions from worker to part of the public is exceptional.  It is amazing if you think of never seeing Andrea on stage before and it seems that she easily could have built up to more roles if she had started this earlier.  it is great to see her on the stage.  Again, she does represent the  tone perfectly during this era as a cast member.

Anabella –  Representing a Kathryn Schaub in an era where women were considered followers of men, is ironic.  Anabella fits the role perfectly, but she is definitely not an individual that would need to follow, she brings the power of Kathryn with an even stronger wave with her emotions as headstrong, stubborn, and strong-willed through every scene – yet you see the injustice done with each of her motions.

Camille –Certainly you would expect the heroine to be a focal point of strength.  In representing Grace Fryer, Camille is able to follow through and through as a pillar of strength with and builds an emotional consciousness, with each progressing scene.  She represents all the women that had such a life-changing, ending, and transforming life that goes beyond one incident and affected so much of the world.

Caroline – As Nancy Jane Harlan, you sense the rivalry between tabloids even closer and more intensely – seeing the specific facial reactions feeding off each other with each announcement.  LOVE this interaction and so will you.

Emiliano I realized that Emiliano could play as bad as a character as well as playing the hero of the day with being the judge – VERY well.  Playing two sides of a coin is made even more his speciality as I noticed in night two.

Giulia – For some reason I noticed the hat and attire even more this second night but again, in looking across the crows that makes up an era, it is pretty to see Giulia is livening up the individuals that make up this era to the absolute maximum level. You can feel at any role she connects with, it will be a successful one.

Ingrid Again, as a spokeswoman, strict regulator of visitors that Katherine Kiley’s attention, Ingrid’s capability is as bright and sure as the dazzling attire she exhibits of the era.  A great part of this cast for sure.

Jorge – Jorge continues to dig into the role of the family man, supporter, admired, and stand up man for a community and era that becomes unwound.  His determination to make the right choices, for himself, those he loves, and his community are a standout and he seemed to be even more determined in the second night.

Lucia – You almost are waiting for that set jaw, determined walk in face of opposition, and smile that assures everyone around her of success to take off in song.  If you have seen her past successes, then you know what a strength Lucia brings to the role of Katherine Kiley and those that suffered during this event.  Each confident step is felt throughout the whole production.

Mariana – Mariana becomes the premonition of what is to come involving radium with a continued confidence and with an increased volume from the first night, you felt it seven stronger.  As Marie Curie she matches the confidence many put into science as well as into the realm of businesses of the time.

Marion – Certainly playing up the pressure to follow the norm and not go against the grain, as the mother not wanting to represent resistence, she plays this role well.  Her increased volume help not only hear that, but you sense it in the actions and looks she throws out as those around her.  It might not be noticed the first show, but certainly is there if you are looking for it.

Matthew – You get the smooth, slick, and cool/stylish talk that represents all you’d want to see and here of someone trying to be persuasive, cool, and influential.  Someone you would not want to disappoint. He does this well, and his ability to raise his voice even more in the second show you sensed this character through and through.  Job well done!    He is able to definitely represent the movement of an era, and do so well.

OliviaNoticing how extremely light-hearted and happy she is as a worker in the beginning, then seeing her transition due to the conditions around you hits you very very hard.  She makes it difficult to put the results of a callous sense of humanity represented in the name of business.  Her name  mentioned  as Irene Rudolph– named throughout the production, will not be easily forgotten due to her performance.

Pablo –  Jack Youngwood represents all the energy, hope, competitiveness, and will to be the top dog though his periodic narration, announcing-style voice, and enthusiasm.  His reactions to any competitive stories are well represented, and a mainstay of this production as the plot advances.

Pablo Gu.Even more determined to steer the course and not deviate from a destructive path, Pablo brings you from step one the to vert last step, never giving up, and not backing down, despite the cost.  His determination and stubbornness is seen is his walk, heard in his almost always callous/directed voice, and his role is a constant reminder throughout the whole production of the presence U.S. Radium Corporation has.

Paola – You sense even more in the second night the disappointment, confusion, and shock she feels as the wife of Arthur Roeder. In fact, you realize how much she represents the whole community in her relating comments made to her by that community.  Her role as an individual between the company and families affected is very real and well represented.

PedroIt is not difficult to see the confidence, irony, and humor Pedro brings to this role in so many roles and parts of the production.  Many iconic roles are represented in his characters and he is a memorable part of commentary, narration, and the sides of the Radium Corporation many do not want to see or hear, and that in fact do realize by the end.  Almost representing a conscience, Pedro again brings to the audience a role that justifies easily his overall complement to this production.

Sebastian – Being able to change positions, both what seems evil and good is made to look easily behind the accent Sebastian plays out.  His ability to bring an acknowledgement of actions to Arthur Roeder, as well  as mark the beginning of the end is very well done.  The revelations he lives through is made quite personal to the audience and you see the absolute asset he becomes on the stage as Dr. Von Sochocky. He plays the role of inventor and miscalculated reason of a horrible incident with even more ease on the second night.

Sofia – I missed the initial start of the show on the first night and noticed /and initially missed) the power of the corporation Sofia represents.  In the highest expectation you’d expect to see in a head mistress, Sofia delves out disappointment, expectations, and a factory mentality from every strict action and word.  A great role filled as you’d want to to be played out.

Stefan – He plays the part of being one of the corporation board members and then the voice of a turning point quite well. You see this ability as being able to do more in roles in the future, which is promising.  He successful helps moves the play forward in his confident narrating and acting ability to let audiences know how all is advancing.

Yankel – Being the last barrier to change, the last step to a successful verdict carries such weight.  I saw a second night of Yankel carrying that responsibility even heavier in the second night as the lawyer Raymond Berry.  His conviction of giving back false hope to the factory girls seems to push him even stronger in questioning Lucia (Katherine) of the chance of their success.  Ultimately, this shows his human nature as an individualsilhouette1.JPG being the pivotal point of this play, and he does it well.

A third night of not catching this production will leave you with not realizing the ability to represent such a powerful event, as evident in those behind the scenes in the form of directors, managers, technical crews, makeup, sound, costume and the impressive outlet for all of these in the actors.  What a gift is has been to catch this agreement of collaboration of the actors working as one successful unit, proving they have much more to you in the remaining year.  Kudos ASF Theatre Company, you have shown us you are the brightest lights that can be seen on and off stage.

Out of the Dark- and Into the Brightness of Hope

clockFlashbacks are powerful, can be a bit blurry, yet some elements of time, past and present, often appear.  Yet, when they carry a sentiment of emotion – they are like a steamroller.  An the end of the 2015-2016 school year, I remember helping a class read through the script of a play, Radium Girls, for Ms. Brownie’s Drama course.  I was interested at the background,  but at the time did not have time to followup on the nature of the play any further.

Fast forward to November 30th, as well as December 01, 2016, and what a seed that had been planted!  Seeing the promotional scene of Radium Girls at the 11th and 12th grade class meeting, then attending the first night, (December 01, 2016) you instantly are aware of the format of a play that stands out, something totally different, and for MANY reasons that follow this production, as well as the impact and it can have on the audience.  So much so, I am still here researching the details of who Marie Curie, Grace Fryer ,  and U.S. Radium Corporation this evening (yes way later than 10:00 PM).

Opening nights, you tend to expect a small showing and after the privilege of seeing 5+ years of productions, that is the norm for sure. However, in counting 65 attendees at third call, not taking into consideration the 8+ more that arrived to the show, this was a great voice that was being added for a first show.  As an usher, you tend to look for more different aspects of the show from the very beginning, however so slight, but noticing the impressive swell for a first official show, on a Thursday, for a totally different venue, you couldn’t help but be relieved and excited.

With the physical programs, you notice so many takeaways later.  What should have been obvious from the beginning, was not when you take a closer look at the covers, which you will notice s you receive one, see if you notice the aspects of the titles as well as the great illustrations and how they represent specific aspects of the production in a great light.

Even in a preliminary class setting, you notice the set of Radium Girls.  Polished, efficient, and on point perfectly.  Catching the right light, seeing the ease of the movements thanks to a great Stage and Tech crew, this set shines wset-lookith perfection, exactness, rawness, efficiency, and accuracy.  From the coloring of the siding of the standout factory windows, that seem to catch the light amid a dismal situation, to the rawness of the wood that resembles even a Crucible-like production you find yourself marveling at the set quite often.

The music that accompanies the lines at the intermission, amazingly in line with the costumes for this era as well – it clicks without a hitch.  The programs matching the dueling personalities of reporters and newspapers, LOVE.  Being able to connect the design of the original ticket to the workings of the science and physiology that comes out of the busy-cityproduction, you realize there are many details that come to you not only during the production, but that follow you out of the theatre.  The set, background scenes during smooth transitions, and music, you feel the heartbeat, excitement, of an era of discovery.

Weighing on your heart is the weight of decisions made that directly impact history itself, whether occurring in Mexico or outside of this country, and you realize the possible weight of these implications internationally.  The cast you recognize as being able to bring home these possibilities of morality that infect every one that comes into contact with them, just as the ‘radium girls’ were infected due to the callousness of a society that just wanted fame, lacked integrity due to the “wantingness” of success, and at the sake of so many lives to achieve this.  This is a message that resounds and often surfaces in many countries around the world, and for a strong cast to pull it off is felt from your heart, to your mind when you exit this performance.

Expectations are hard to defy, and when you are used to a single musical every year, confronting that “norm” with an alternative is often a steep bill to fill.  Yet, Radium Girls does that from so many aspects; from a detailed, simple, yet exquisite set, to a cast that builds the momentum of historical implications, to a tech, makeup, and costume cast that allows this whole education of one of the most vital reveals in history, blended all together, Radium Girls shines in the way it is supposed to.  From yellow journalism, to the threats of muckraking, you as an attendance member are allowed to seek through the unfolding events and find a truth for yourself, thanks to the countless talents you see on and off the stage.  That seems worth the ticket itself and to invest in such an opportunity is beyond priceless for a risk in adding a new production to the year.

Without further ado, specific accolades have been waiting “just off the stage”:

Adrian – Without knowing Adrian, you will recognize the dead seriousness of his personality and how he finds a middle ground to unbury a consciousness he had tried hard to repress.  His bad guy images certainly seems easy for him to pull off, yet as his callousness peels away, you seem him able to manage this perfectly as the production progresses.  Knowing him personally, you wonder why he has not attempted a lead before, and realize the talent he is capable as a relatively new lead to the ASF theatre production world.  Representing Arthur Roeder was a masterpiece and the stream of consciousness that results.

Ana Paula – With her ability to represent a consciousness as a factory worker and doctor that brings justice to the situation U.S. Radium Corporation dances around.  With a sureness, certainty and confidence she has brought to stage before, you are relived and glad to see Ana Paula back on the stage.  Yet as a supporter of Katherine Kiley and worker, she shows her versatility in a variety of situations.

Anna Victoria – Representing the voice and tone of an era welcoming the effects of radium initially, Amna’s tall stature matches the power she brings to this period of discovery.  She certainly helps build the false hopes radium brought to the world, as well as the familial aspects of elements, science, and family in one complete circle.  Excellent delivery of content to the plot and the era at hand.

Analise – The straight forward, no nonsense demeanor that becomes the face of the U.S. Radium Corporation only takes a moment to be 100% dead on or 100% not fitting.  Analise, as a clerk representing U.S. Radium Corporation, and worker from within, is able to represent how you would expect a representative of the corporation to react in the face of allegations and the beginning of the end, of such a corporation.  Professional, swift, and reactionary.  Well done.

Andrea – Blending in seems like an easy job sure.  Again, knowing Andrea, you are surprised to see her on stage and yet after seeing her, you are like, why not before?  Excited and proud to see her do an bang up job of being a member of this production, and able to support the tone perfectly during this era.

Anabella – Pushing, demanding, reconciling deep with the tragedy unfolding, and being proactive?  Not a difficult thing to do amid a stream if “normality” as portrayed by a large company.  yet, Annabella shows the gusto and resolve as a character and a dedicated Kathryn Schaub.  She pulls off the ability to not be  forgettable throughout this unfolding drama, as the corporation would like her her to easily forgotten.  Annabella’s persistence is easy to spot immediately – and is constant throughout the show.

CamilleYes.  All you need to know is yes.  Literally seeing Camille one day in an SAT test, I thought, very pleasant, optimistic, friendly, QUIET.  Her ability on the stage in representing icon Grace Fryer towards building a consciousness? YES.  Camille is able to put your heartstrings, consciousness, and considerations of two sides of a story centerstage and keeps you there the whole time.  Kudos kudos kudos.

Caroline – Tabloid reporter Nancy Jane Harlan is easily to identify with her projected voiced announcements.  The ability to serve as narrator, historian, and competitive tabloid newsie, Caroline brings the hilarity, seriousness, and competition for the real story throughout the whole production.  You sense a Hollywood style of gusto in calling the unfolding events, and a performance that draws you in to the next, then the next, and the next scene successfully and noticing the details that represent a myriad of qualities that you look for in every appearance she makes.

Emiliano – His quiet demeanor is school is not the same character you see on stage. Playing two sides of a coin in handling U.S. Radium Corporations affairs, as well as offering criticisms to the revelations, Emiliano moves forward in the plot effortlessly as his contributions as an actor.  One of many reason why events unfold as they do, Emiliano’s presence is very felt on stage and flashbacks of his contributions in Fame still come back as well.

Giulia – Giulia’s ability to support the plot is right on cue.  It is easy to say this is a lead role and others well not so much.  No the case.  Giulia pulls off the reactions perfectly the way you’d expect them to be with breaking news.  It is rewarding to see her as part of this cast in supporting the momentum of this production and worth looking for throughout the events.

Ingrid – Seeing Ingrid in costume was truly a shock as she wears the era very well.  Her confident, era-driven image is reinforced in her straightforward manner, costume, and poise.  Excellent delivery and representation of a foregone era, represented in just the way you would expect.  Representing an era is not easy to do, yet Ingrid makes it look easy easy easy.

Jorge – being able to transition through the steps, expectations, and devotion of a man to the American Dream is pulled off perfectly, in step with the character of Grace Fryer.  Typical comments you’d expect from a man in situations of marital consideration, as well as trying to relate to the typical reactions, to the expectations of a breadwinner during this era, you get upset, sympathize and can easily find yourself in the era with the Jorge based on his delivery.  Well done.

Lucia – You find yourself, if you are aware of Lucia’s voice, pulling for her every step of thew way in this production as she dodges, runs, and overcomes the hurdles put in front of her during this production.  Her determination and eye for success off stage as well as on stage, it can’t be missed, even when you are not looking for it.  Glad to have Lucia as the savior of being Katherine Kiley, and pulled off to the “T”.

Mariana – Again, alongside Ingrid, Mariana is able to pull off the attire, feeling, tone, and demeanor of a bygone era.  The light accent, professionalism, and discovery that is exciting at the beginning of this era is well represented – and the poise she exhibits is unmistakable for the tone you’d expect of one Marie Curie.  Matching the costume, Mariana produces a confidence in her discovery you feel immediately.  Soft-spoken in a first production, we want to be able to hear her even louder to hear the accent and personality she brings to this role, and am positive with the next performances, you will relish what she brings to this role.

Marion – Determined, unswayable, and stubborn.  Marion is able to push through these qualities to every audience member, and does not back down as Anna Fryer.  I kept looking around to try and find my mother in the audience, and knowing this character was pushing for the nest option for her daughter as was possible.  She plays an excellent pawn in the battle between corporation and consciousness.  LOVE.

Matthew – Wow.  When the guys are bad, they are bad and Matthew brings this home as the board tilts always in favor of the corporation.  He has much to add to the cast, and though at times his voice was difficult to hear, you realize this is all in detecting the volume needed for a production.  As he finds the volume needed to get across his sentiments in the next few shows, you will definitely want to observe his cockiness, pushiness, and determination to be the corporation man.  His reactions, delivery, and sureness in what is right for the girls and a corporation, he is able to bring this home from beginning to end.  He is able to definitely represent the movement of an era, and do so well.

Olivia – She had me at the spotlight.  Through the amazing dialogue of Annabella, you see Olivia as the perfect consciousness of an era gone wrong.  She is able to position her emotions in front of an audience that make you feel the very wrongdoings that represented so much loss.  Slight dialogue but volumes in representation, Olivia is able to say a thousand things without a single word – and WOW is just an overall understatement and becomes MUCH MORE than just a frequently-mentioned Irene Rudolph– named throughout the production.

Pablo – Go. – With the ability to project his voice, charisma, and competition as a tabloid reporter and narrator alongside Caroline, the physical reactions, energy, and ability is evident from the first moment Pablo – Jack Youngwood, steps on stage.  You have confidence in the history, facts, and developments, even with controversial reporting you see as he well represents.  The ability to bring humor, sarcasm, and wit are a small list of the success he brings to this role, as you would expect in seeing Pablo in many amazing roles to this point.  It is difficult to imagine any production without these qualities he brings to the stage.

Pablo Gu. – When the men are bad, they are really bad.  Pablo brings his bad boy self to full fruition on stage and clings to it.  He is able to bring every audience member through the sureness of a corporation that could do know wrong.  Projecting his voice well as if knowing the exact volume needed for the mics, working through the very exacting expressions to emphasize his position and confidence, Pablo enables the plot to move forward in exact moments every step of the way.  Crucial to the production and exacting, you know why he is in this role from the very beginning.

Paola – Bringing home the convictions that Arthur Green feels but never voices, Paola does a great job in representing an overall consciousness and caught between the tabloid news.  Wanting to her her voice on a higher level, the consequent shows will enable this for sure.  Wearing and modeling the era just as you’d expect it, Paola embodies the role of women of the time amazingly, and begins to bring the voice of women to a peak not usually attempted VERY WELL.

Pedro – Working the angle as a caring doctor, as well as manipulating both client and corporation, to the iconic letter writer.  Pedro’s energy could ooze out in any role, and it a welcome site to see hands down.  His confidence, personality, and sureness are assets in all respects.  One can’t get the cowbell image out of their minds if you saw Fame (sorry) – however, his energy and possibility are there, and a welcome site to such an era-specific piece.

Sebastian – Perfect fit.  One can’t picture anyone else representing the accent, representation, and consciousness of such as a role other than Sebastian.  Moments of softness occurred occasionally which is just a byproduct of testing the vocal waters on a first night show, however, the conviction the doctor comes to comes full circle and is represented beyond well through Sebastian’s ability. His ability to bring a consciousness through his methods of misleading, then self discovery are quite evident, and well enabled through his confident role. He represents what could have been so well, it is impossible to not feel the helplessness at the end with his role.

Sofia – Could you imagine another type of boss ?  I for one, could not.  Pushy, demanding, overpowering, it is all there at Sofia’s fingertips and she used that position well.  Slight at times in her volume of voice, again just a byproduct of a first night show.  Her strictness and rigidness is played to the role and done well.  One can imagine many examples of such factory-style managers due to her nailing of such a role.

Stefan – As one of the elements of consciousness with Radium Girls, Stefan plays this role well.  Belting out his volume and findings, representing with surety his findings, and pushing forward with others as a minority for justice, he gives this role to the audience easily.  His conclusions will remain with you based on his sure-footedness demeanor.

Yankel – Swimming against the tide and representing the minority consciousness is not an easy thing to do.  Yet Yankel does just that and keeps pushing forward, and the audience feels it.  Making a great team with Lucia, he easily represents the saving grace of the women in the factory, and provides the debate-influenced confidence to keep moving forward.  Thank goodness a knight in the court is represented in Yankel’s role.

Often what occurs off screen is so powerful, it propels those on screen forward with much velocity.  Having the privilege to see Daniela, Alani, Andrea, Roberta, Karla, Adriana, and Susanne ‘s work in makeup before going on stage, and the success it did in representing the characters?  A crucial element to the success of this production.  Add to this the exact way you’d want to see the types of apparel for this area thanks to Tamara and Roman – VERY well done.   With the props that existed thanks to Mateo and and Loic, all seemed exactly as it would appear in real life.  With the endless sacrifices of time and energy given by Teruhi and Hugo, it is no wonder that such a production would be exciting to see and discover.  From Andres and Patricio implementing a new sound to the set, to Isabel, Rodolfo, Alan, Andrea, Julia, Alberto, Miguel, Sebastian, Enrique, and Bevin to insure that all on stage and the exact lighting, paired with cues occurred – excellent job all around. One can not underestimate the amazingness of an excellent Tech Club to allow a first run to go as smoothly as this did.

It takes much consideration to take risk, and change.  It is exciting to see a director  as Ms Brownie take on so many challenges, risks, and changes in one new scheduled production, yet, allowing the talented possibilities in the above-mentioned to have another chance i the year to produce their talents?  Thank goodness.  So much that went right and so little that went wrong is a huge Kudos for all the risks willing to be taken, to amplify the talents and possibilities available.  Thank you.

Not sure how many of you know how lucky we are to have as a inter and Master Electrician, Jose Herrera, but one cannot imagine anyone else behind the board than Jos himself.  For me, it is not a production without seeing him peering over that control room with Hugo.

Hard to reconcile the amazing support you receive with you see the Upper School Head at a first night production, but yes, there he was and his excitement at seeing how many people were at a first show?  Priceless.  The parents in support of such a major change and the roles their actors/actresses play is a vital part of this production and this was certainyl the case in this first night run.  The companies Moms and Dads as well as backbone supporters: Leslie Tattersfield, Daniel Lowe, Bevin Mick, Nat Soto, Su Kretschmer, Teruhi Yoshioka, Jennifer Long, Chase McIver, Laurent Walters, Rosanna Cesarman, and Kenneth Dawson – the show must go on and does thanks to these supporters.

amish-dark

With two shows left, you will find yourself at a complete miscalculation if you miss this production – bringing the darkness of innovation, into the light of education through everyone involved.

Puerto Escondido, Chacahua, LIFE.

This is one for the books. Literally. Perhaps this tops any of the discovery-based posts that I could conceive of or have had in the past, and I have to say, that is pretty out there.

One of the best discoveries over a Thanksgiving Break was coming to Puerto Escondido with friends last year – a beach I had never been to, and finding hardly anyone there –it was one of the best kept secrets of Thanksgiving and not being with family and in the states. As close to paradise as ever. So I knew, I wanted to come back here, absolutely.

Knowing this, in late September of 2016, I immediately booked a trip to do the same, roundtrip flight -1300.00 pesos on VivaAerobus, finding the lodgings a little less empty and not able to stay as planned at Chicitana like last year – I was familiar with One Love from eating an amazing fish dinner there – and with openings there available – I immediately booked a private room for Sunday, Monday, Tuesday. Total amount 2700.00 pesos. Again, do the conversion to the U.S. dollar and it is an amazing AMAZING ability to travel to a vacation getaway for that price.

I wanted to stay longer during the break.   I looked to see what was around Puerto Escondido, but something different. I saw a place called Chacahua, and it had a natural park. NO IDEA what this was – why not I thought? I planned to go to Chacahua for two days, enough time to figure out what Chacahua actually was about, then head back to Puerto Escondido for one day, and leave for Mexico City Saturday. A definite plan made and something to look forward to. Little did I know, never in my wildest dreams would I know or think, what will occur and unfold.

FINALLY – after some very crammed weeks, days, and hours of what seemed activity after activity piled upon each other, the Friday half day was HERE! YES! It was almost as each of us could hear the waves breaking on that Friday as we all realized a well-deserved break had descended upon us.

The next two days I settled in to leave for the next week, the errands that would mainstay my leave, extra dog food, getting ready for Walking Dog to save the day for my absence, putting some items back and organized into its place, things fell into place. Sometimes I would go back and check the internet to find the information about Chacahua and always found the same website facing me, the same names about where to stay, what cabanas were offered, warning to ask for a fan when staying due to the isolation and the bugs since this was on a lagoon, and while I became more and more excited, the anticipation was paired with a slight level of worry of the unknown, heading somewhere I knew nothing, absolutely nothing about; yet, that was truly part of the fun as well.

Finally, running around like crazy, despite having plenty if prep time, I still found myself running around like a madman, right up until the time I had to leave and then finally grabbing a taxi to head to Terminal 1- VivaAerobus – and expecting many delays. ( Last year, although we were schedule to leave during the day – the repeated delays for almost 2 hours reminded me, do NOT expect any different – even with leaving at 8:40 at night, or 9:30, or later …)

True to my expectations, and despite my being there exactly 30 minutes before my boarding time of 8:05 PM, Location B, Terminal 1 kept flashing on the screen – no gate apparent. More to satisfy my own fears, I kept heading to the Aerobus desk, “No Puerto, no flight, right?” Over and over to satisfy my great luck of missing last flight out to Puerto.

While waiting, I overheard, and oversaw right next to me a couple that was contemplating after asking at the information desk, by how much time they were going to miss their flight. I knew by now, with my second time to expect delays, this was their case, so I jumped in to alleviate their worries. “I know you are seeing Terminal 1, B for the gate, but don’t worry, we all have that. Expect back to back delays until the gate appears, which it will, just not at the time you were expecting .” Relieved, we began an interchange with this couple, on vacation from Texas, and this was their connecting flight, first time in Benitio Juarez airport. We both were on vigilant duty for each other’s flight over the next hour. Conversations discovering his wife was also a teacher, on break, led to how I came to be in Mexico. Basic but but the real story, a great story – will review this if you ask me sometime – it is a dinner time story!

Truly Repentino. . When the question was asked “What is the cause for so much disparity in Mexico between finances and the groups, Upper, Middle, and lower financial statuses?” I realized how complicated that answer was. It would be too easy to say, the government. Truly the government maybe could play such a big role, but how does one also inform someone about the inability for that government at times to motivate, activate, and reach into such a vast, deep, and complicated history as Mexico to show the heartbreaks, the achievements, the amazing stories that have come to make Mexico – Mexico? It is as overwhelming a task as the 20 foot wave I was dreaming about seeing in Puerto Escondido, so “government red tape” would have to do for now. Gate 12, Cancun, Gate 3 Puerto Escondido flashed subtly on the flight screen, as if it had been there all along – and we thanked each other for making sure we were able to follow through to our destinations, and we embarked.

Within the plane, I was lucky enough to sense the woman beside me had a sense of humor, with her inquiry of the likelihood that the passenger with the dozen Krispy Kremes, was going to share with the rest of the passengers. I thought not. Everyone was itching to JUST BE OFF to Puerto after what seemed like agonizing delays in having the plane arrive to the gate, and waiting on the plane until WE COULD JUST TAKE OFF. Halfway through the flight we began conversation that revealed her departure for the Los Angeles area, to Puerto Escondido frequently to decide if she wanted to continue to find a place to purchase. I told her of my favorable experience there last year, we discussed the favorable aspects of One Love versus other locations on the Zicatella strip and it just fueled my desire to be on the beach faster than I could fathom.  img_9445

The familiar small airport greeted me, grabbing my lone small suitcase I found a collectivo van that held several of us heading to Zicatella, for 60 pesos I found myself at the door of One Love in no time. The young lady who greeted me was a dream come true at 11:30 PM at night, and got me all squared away in the Dylan room, the private cabana at One Love.

The Dylan Room? Truly, the quote, “You can’t be smart and in love at the same time” surrounded by images of Bob Dylan made me laugh considerably. My mind and body screamed at me, “You are HERE!”

I settled into plans and the awesome map One Love gave me, and loved every peso of the 2600.00 it cost to be right here for the next three days. It is so hard to describe how warm the Pacific water was each day, how refreshing the waves coming in licking my ankles were. How amazing it was to watch the Oakland Raiders (Oakland? Yes Oakland Raiders, lol) and the Texans play, IN MEXICO, on television with colleague Matt Maciness and his brother, how surreal it was to see colleague Jennifer on the Zicatella Beach and then the next day hanging out atimg_9512 Carrizalillo Beach with Mar – and their friend from Puerto Rico who worked for Disney, ending up at the amazing restaurant Espadin  – with a view of the Lagoon most people would still not believe even though, as we watched the 4 minute sunset that was a dream sealed the deal that yes, what we were seeing was a miracle. Even with the jazz playing over us and descending down the cliffs into the ocean, this all seemed half real, half surreal.

Yet, meeting the day before, Lina from Switzerland, another young lady whose aunt owns a hotel at Puerto, that worked at One Love for the summer, had hinted that I might want to talk to Victor, a tour guide at Puerto, who was involved in many projects that took into consideration art, AND the interview I had done with Gerard, Hareth, and former ASF student Ana representing the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants –  both of these had me combining work, research, and vacation at such a rate, I was on a activism high.

Leaving my friends at img_9540Estrada, I headed to my appointment with Victor at 9:00PM -ish at One Love. We went on for about 3 more hours of connections that we would discover that could connect our goals of involving communities into art, while improving the communities around us. Lina listened as we found matching goals, objectives, a starting point to try and make something happen that would impact the individuals around us, in the very communities that are assets and yet untapped for amazing things to come. Brilliant how someone you meet in Puerto Escondido, from Switzerland can connect two people in Mexico, and see how plans could develop to further both our goals. One was one amazing thing was how Victor had been using the strategy to map out his community for the assets AND the needs, just like the Jane Goodall Institute project I had embarked on this past summer, and he did not even know about it. Revelations.

Thanks to the assistance of One Love, I found a receipt –sketched plan to make it to Chacahua – there are two options. One taxi – roughly 500 pesos. I didn’t like that option, I had always been used to operating on a shoe lace budget, so I wanted to know the other options, briefly mentioned on the website.   They proceeded to tell me the more complicated option. I could take a taxi to Banorte in town, 30 pesos. From there a van would take me for 45 pesos to Zapolito. From there a blue tarp-covered truck would take me to the mouth of Chacahua, 20 pesos). From there I would be able to hop onto the boat for 80 pesos and travel to the mainland of Chacahua. Deal. I knew my luck sometimes in discovering the accuracy and ease of what it SOUNDED like, but I also knew, my gut screamed, THIS OPTION.   To be safe, I paid for my Friday to Saturday stay at One Love ahead of time, checked out as close to noon as possible on Wednesday, and stepped into the unknown.

Get read for the crazy ride I had to finding and discovering Chacahua!

“No Hard Feelings”

screen-shot-2016-11-20-at-7-46-19-amMorning Song – Avett Brothers.    I found a link to them from NPR and was hooked on No Hard Feelings, and with a little digging, found a gold line in some other songs.

Sometimes you stumble across a song, a writing, etc that just helps memories flood back, both the far past and the recent, and well yes, the Avett Brothers, Hard Feelings, did exactly that for me.

Thanksgiving 2016 and MUCH to be thankful for and often I complain complain and forget that these things have been amazing-

A new level of making connections with people from difference schools in Mexico, as well as a new year of new staff, and love working and meeting them as they provide new ideas constantly and provide a sense of renewal.

An amazing Repentino. adventure continues this year, a staff made of old and new, that more than any year ever, have been able to do so much more with their own confidences,

Healthy family and they are having good things happening in their lives – there is not much you could ask for.

A job that allows me to delve in, discover more about my strengths, as well as my weaknesses and rediscover myself every day.

Students from years past reconnecting with slowly and realizing how lucky I have been on the past as well as the present day.

Pets that make me laugh, smile, and realize even the days they infuriate me, they remind me how good I have it 🙂

Appreciating every day more and more, what I HAVE opposed to that basic human nature to get get get get….sigh

With so many cool marathon-schedule events happening, and amazing staff on our Repentino. pulling them off amazingly, in addition to working with other clubs, other groups, the sphere of being successful is redefined and reshaped – redefining who Repentino. as an organization as an influence in the world.

A world-class advocacy of students that every morning, make me laugh, smile, and yes still shake my head.

Having the opportunity to go back to Pittsburgh, Delaware, Takoma Park, MD and visit some great great places and just be around friends and family – despite the rise in the dollar!  LOVE!

These are simply just a FEW reasons why I am seeing more and more how Thanksgiving is not isolated to just the United States, but how it is reached out and influenced my and so many awesome individuals I have been lucky enough to meet.

I have never become used to how fast time flies – and never reminded of it more than when I see current students who have been with me for so long, then graduation hits you, hits you in the heart at capping ceremony, then hits you harder in your soul at graduation, and you realize, how you just wish you would have made more days where you just sat and talked, laughed, remembered, because at graduation, it becomes so hard to recapture any of those moments.

That leads to moments you realize how many lost memories and moments exist outside our sphere of school, and all in all, you realize what a lucky son of a gun you are for having the students who have become family, the colleagues that help you make it through every day, the colleagues that have moved on that you still hold close to your heart, and the family that move you forward and oftentimes without them knowing how much.

I still marvel over the weaknesses I have, but the strength I have to recognize them given to me from all the above mentioned, and yes, you realize how amazing Thanksgiving is thanks to all the people in your life that you often don’t think about all at once.

Sticking with the Avett Brothers, I listen to this and smile, and think of all of you that have helped me become who I am today  🙂    February 7 – Avett Brothers.

Thank you for making me who I am and helping me get through the bad to a better me!

“Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea” – Never Truer.

img_9439You always wonder what you will get when you go into a play, concert, production, any event that you know minimal amount with the hope of coming out a winner.  With research, Deep Blue Sea seemed to be a introspective look at the role on relationships, that view to outsiders, and the conflicts that occur among all.

In watching the set, the vastness of the set showing multiple floors and the comings and goings, I felt the openness of the set showing the interior of the building helped reveal the isolation, sometimes “aloneness” felt by the female protagonist, Helen McCrory (who played Hester Collyer).

When the National Theatre does their intermission interviews, I found the reason behind the full set was to set the appearance of everyone on the building being able to “hear” or sense the life of Hester.  It would literally represent the “paper thin” walls that appeared, to allow that appearance when the tenants talked to Hester. I never thought of that at all, which was one of the many reasons I life the behind the scenes dialogue that occurs with productions at the Lunario, from the  different perspectives are at every corner.

Ever see Who’s Afraid of Virgina Woolf?  In 2001, as part of the Stratford Festival course at Slippery Rock University, under Dr. Permenter, we attended.  It was the first time I ever saw the production. I was shaken, truly.  I remember sitting beside Ms Ashley Brand, and reminiscent I was, of how horrific the stressful moments reminded me of some of the worst relationships I ever had in my own life.  It was that good.

The Deep Blue Sea reminded me of this as well.  The conflicts, missed connection in the relationships we see, the reminder that relationships are a very complex beast, the misunderstandings of others we think we understand, this production is truly a deep and personal account of all these themes.  The actors and actresses, all play a pivotal moment into the spyglass experience.  Peter Sullivan was the perfect Casablanca-like individual that seemed to carry a sense of grace and magic when he entered on and off the stage.

Certainly Post-War Britain is represented – and I think the most through Tom Burke’s role of Freddie.  Listed as the “bad-boy” character, it truly seems Burke is able to represent all the disenchanted, discontent attitudes that did find themselves in so many during this somewhat seemingly stagnant period.  Unsure of which direction to turn to, uncertain promises and paths to success, and so many more attitudes found themselves within the persona that Tom Burke would go on to play, and done brilliantly.

I do like back stories, appreciating the revival of this production, from Terrence Rattigan’s tragic backstory.  The issue of recognizing diverse beliefs does stem from this article, but that my friends is another blog post.  Overall the brief appearances from the other characters that served as friends and neighbors, all of these characters were powerful and deserve a second look over as well as a look at this newest revival Terrence Rattigan‘s production.

The director of this production of Depp Blue Sea, Carrie Cracknell, Brilliant. This pre-show talk – https://www.nationaltheatre.org.uk/file/13421/view – WOW.  The talk with Ms Cracknell during this production shows how she can channel the power of women, their historical roles in various occupations, and the need for reform on behalf of women everywhere.  A resounding echo to our President elect for sure.

There were so many resounding elements from this production that carry themselves off the stage.  True, sometimes there is power in not knowing in initially, and discovering as you go.  Such was the case in this Lunario production.  Between the Devil and the Deep Blue  Sea has never been more real thanks to this production.

The Hidden Jewels in Reading Slam Take 2.

Disappointed.  How many times have the well-laid, perfect plans on an organizations’ event turned sour.  Personally, I still harbor the disasters from a throughly well-planned event when I go to plan any event – any activity, and it motivates me to push on and avoid those same roadblocks.  So there is that.

When we planned a new event, Reading Slam 101 this year, a slight groan might have been heard through the pages of the Repentino. Literary Art publication with the fear of taking on too much.  Understood, taking on things is aokay, but we do it with the intention if it being successful.  So, the first Reading Slam, crickets could be heard and less people that fill a bathroom, in tight quarters, despite thorough planning.  Yet, resolve and hope was not diminished.

screen-shot-2016-11-09-at-1-45-15-amRound two – you could FEEL it – just something different, but a sense of nervousness about the outcome, what it would be, how this would play out different with out work to rebound, hope.

Rewarded.  Slow at first, and picking up speed – it was AMAZING.  Thank to all the participants, and I mean all including a very special guest speaker that was well, let’s explain.  Sam, our co editor in chief for Repentino. is slowly putting aside the “I’m not good that this” card and just pushing herself forward and guess what?  She is turning out to be pretty good at this – which is the key of persistence.

From alumni, to current educators, to students, students rushing in and still making this a priority, we saw a Reading Slam worth more than it’s weight in what was read, but through the energy and passion for wanting to push forward and let their contribution make a difference.  it lined up with the very inspiring words, laughter, and dedication to how writing does make a difference – thanks to poet Enrique Marquez Jaramillo.  Some of the best speakers and guests we have had, have been in secret and their words resonating beyond secrets for sure.  Translation here –  enrique-marquez-2.   Having the support of someone as amazing, believing in students like ASF does through Daniella Escalante Nassar – do you see what a difference it makes? Anyone can rebound form a zero to the opposite of the scale – this was existing proof, just in the form of an event.  Or a poet.  Or a student.  Or a teacher.  Or a future any of the above  🙂

One of the defining moments was seeing Ms Ritter, even though she was tutoring STILL coming to read a dramatic piece and making this a priority.  Or Regina coming at very last minute, just as all was about to end, and willing to not only be confident to read a variety of pieces, from a Haiku to an excerpt of her current story in process, to inviting the audience how to check out more or her story- inviting them as guests.  Or original works but a not so recent graduate, turned educator in Mr. Jones, and experiencing the motivation in his words.  Or the ASF sponsor herself, allowing us to share her inner thoughts with everyone involved.

This is powerful when you have individuals as the above willing to put so much on the line to push forward, Michaela, Jose, Diana, Sisel, Marc, individual that came to this Reading Slam not even expecting to participate, and yet, their contribution, (many think it is so small that are contributing) and in reality, it is their determination, will, and passion for something, and willingness to break through doubts other have, that lead others to gain confidence.  It is vital for individuals to support each other, clubs to support other clubs, current clubs to turn their eyes internationally to see how they can affect change in their own communities, as well as int he world around them.  This often involves risk-taking, and sometimes standing up for something you believe in.  Worth it?  Most definitely.  Something I wish my own country would have done during the election and even post election, I hope this will be the case to hold individuals MROE RESPONSIBLE for how they treat each other.  Yet, this can start in such an event as even a Reading Slam.

Call it Poetry, call it a reading slam, the flexibility to change an event for the sake of hearing others’ views, words, and thoughts, is an art form in itself that Repentino. takes pride in, aligning with the title, and meaning, of without warning or suddenly.  Thanks to this powerful Reading Slam, many can leave and take away much more than that.  Stay tuned for some solid examples of the material read here, so you can see what to expect, and what you can bring to the next Reading Slam, in December, in the form of a short story, (less than 5 minutes).

I can’t describe how proud I am to have seen the strides and challenges we, as a group specifically, in Repentino., has grown alongside with, matured and seemingly is growing to be a voice for positive change and supporting others.  Five years ago obviously, the dream was to SURVIVE and somehow, some day much later, grow – to do just that, survive.  Thanks to the bold risks, creativity, and ability to see beyond the page, Repentino., as one example, has grown to serve as a beacon of openness and a path to create a more open look at everything around us.  In the process, we have learned that that is the goal and right of many organizations, and if Repentino. can help others achieve that, aren’t we that much better for it?

I felt our esteemed guest reader, Enrique Marquez Jaramillo, was able to represent all that Mexico stands to represent, conflict, emotions, working through so much based on our experience to them, and a boldness to tackle the word for our sake, and the sake of others.  What better gift could an individual provide?  I can think of few if any gifts that coulscreen-shot-2016-11-09-at-1-41-35-amd be as powerful.  Thank you to all that allowed this to be a defining moment.  We look forward to cohosting Master Yamazaki, calligrapher,
on Tuesday, with the Asian Club. To hear our previous Repentino. podcast with him, click on our link!
